Read our latest interview with journalist and historian of the dissident movement Mario Corti, part of RFE/RL’s Samizdat Archives – Views from Within, a new Blinken OSA Archivum project developed by Katerina Belenkina.

Corti spent 25 years at Radio Liberty—15 of them in the Samizdat Unit and a further decade as head of the Russian Service. Before joining Radio Liberty, he worked at the Italian Embassy in Moscow in the early 1970s. Through his efforts, a substantial body of samizdat literature and documentation on political repression in the Soviet Union reached Western Europe, helping to preserve and disseminate voices that official channels sought to silence.

His recollections offer a unique perspective on the people and practices behind the Samizdat Archives, a collection built from materials smuggled across the Iron Curtain and preserved today at the Blinken OSA Archivum.

🏳️‍🌈📚 On June 16, CEU Vienna will host a roundtable discussion and exhibition opening for Records Uncovered:
LGBTQIA+ Histories, Activism, and Politics in Hungary and Beyond.

The exhibition, developed by the Blinken OSA Archivum and the Háttér Archive and Library, presents the histories of gay and le***an movements in Central and Southeastern Europe between 1945 and 1999 through archival documents, media reports, correspondence, artworks, and ephemera. It highlights both the shared experiences and diverse trajectories of LGBTQIA+ activism across the region.

We are pleased that our colleague Csaba Szilágyi, Interim Manager, Chief Archivist, and Head of the Human Rights Program at Blinken OSA Archivum, will participate in the roundtable discussion alongside scholars and activists reflecting on the preservation, visibility, and contemporary relevance of LGBTQIA+ histories.

📚🏛️ A Blinken OSA Archivum idén is aktív résztvevője a CEU Élhető Világ Fesztiválnak, amely június 12–13. között várja az érdeklődőket a CEU budapesti campusán.

🖼️ A fesztivál ideje alatt ingyenesen látogatható A CEU története című vándorkiállításunk a Nyitott Galériában (Nádor utca 11.), amely a Közép-európai Egyetem 35 éves történetét mutatja be archív fotók, dokumentumok és személyes történetek segítségével.
A kiállítás kurátora Székely Katalin, társkurátora Izinger Judit, a Blinken OSA Archivum munkatársai. Izinger Judit mindkét napon, pénteken és szombaton 16 órától tárlatvezetést tart a kiállításban.

🎬 Június 12-én, pénteken este a Re Verzió Nemzetközi Emberi Jogi Dokumentumfilm Fesztivál programjaként vetítjük Olga Kosanović Kicsit sem lipicai című dokumentumfilmjét. A humorral és személyes történeteken keresztül mesélő film az állampolgárság, a hovatartozás és a bürokrácia kérdéseit járja körül. A vetítést 20 órától közönségtalálkozó és beszélgetés követi.

🎤 Külön öröm számunkra, hogy a fesztivál ünnepélyes megnyitóját pénteken 17 órától Rév István, a Blinken OSA Archivum alapító igazgatója tartja.

До складу журі DOCU/СВІТ увійшли: Катерина Ботанова, дослідниця культури, кураторка та письменниця, яка мешкає та працює поміж Україною та Швейцарією, Томас Постулка, чеський куратор фестивальних програм і документального кіно, а також Еніко Гюреско, угорська культурна менеджерка та одна з провідних фігур у галузі документального кіно в Європі.

Катерина Ботанова
У 2024 році доєдналася до Інституту фронтиру як керівниця медіапроєктів, а у 2026 запустила спецпроєкт «25 стратегічних питань для України» у співпраці з Ukraïner.
У 2023–2025 роках була гостьовою кураторкою Дослідницької платформи ПінчукАртЦентру, де впорядкувала антологію «Повернення історії. Деколоніальність та мистецтво в Україні після 1991 року» і опікувалася виставкою «Архіпелаг історії». Влітку 2025 року Ботанова також відповідала за артпроєкт «Херсон. Степ тримає» у Мистецькому арсеналі.
Від 2014 року співкурує швейцарське бієнале Culturescapes.
Її тексти виходять у різних медіа, а також у книгах, виданих Routledge, McGill-Queen’s University Press, Forum Transregionale Studien, Ibidem Verlag та ін. Катерина Ботанова є членкинею Українського ПЕН.

Томас Постулка
Народився в Оломоуці, Чехія. Навчався в Університеті Палацького, де у 2020 році здобув ступінь магістра з кінознавства та медіадосліджень. Із 2016 року працює на фестивалі Academia Film Olomouc, нині як асистент із комунікацій. Відповідав за текстову ідентичність кіноклубу Pastiche Filmz в Оломоуці.
У 2020 році почав працювати упорядником програм та координатором із залучення аудиторії на фестивалі One World. Із 2022 року керує програмним відділом фестивалю.

Еніко Гюреско
Має ступінь бакалавра з історії мистецтв і магістра з дизайну та менеджменту у галузі мистецтва. Із 2020 року входить до команди KineDok, є членкинею Європейської асоціації документального кіно та Європейської кіноакадемії.
У 2022–2025 роках була членкинею правління MADOKE — Угорської асоціації документального кіно. Обіймає посаду директорки Міжнародного фестивалю документального кіно про права людини VERZIÓ — одного з головних угорських кінофестивалів, який щороку відбувається у листопаді. VERZIÓ належить до Мережі фільмів про права людини та Doc Around Europe.

ACTIVATE Seminar on Challenges of Archiving Social Movements

How can archives collaborate with social and political movements while preserving diverse histories and experiences? This question was at the center of the second hybrid seminar of the European Marie Skłodowska-Curie Staff Exchange project ACTIVATE, held in Milan on May 18, 2026. The event explored historical and contemporary challenges of archiving social movements, marginalized communities, and activist initiatives. More: https://archivum.org/news/699

The Blinken OSA Archivum was represented by Senior Research Fellow Oksana Sarkisova and Chief Archivist Csaba Szilágyi, who presented on the role of archives in advancing human rights and social justice through projects such as Refugee DocsMap, *Records Uncovered*, and community archiving initiatives. The seminar also discussed future ACTIVATE collaborations, including a 2027 Summer University to be hosted by the Archivum in Budapest.

Developed by Katerina Belenkina, this interview series brings together the voices of former Radio Liberty staff members who worked in the Research Department and the Samizdat Unit during the 1970s and 1980s.

Their work helped build and preserve the Samizdat Archives, a unique part of the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Research Institute collection. Compiled from materials smuggled across the Iron Curtain, the archive documents the Soviet human rights movement and human rights violations in the second half of the twentieth century. Many of those featured in the interviews were themselves authors, distributors, or readers of samizdat before joining the radio.

By connecting personal memories with archival records, the project offers new perspectives on the collection and makes these remarkable historical materials more accessible to researchers and the wider public.
