People with normal hobbies go golfing, watch television, work in the garden, or maybe take up woodworking. Sailors have a slightly different definition of free time: go sailing, watch other people sail, talk about sailing, and buy boat parts we absolutely did not plan on buying.
Then there’s the overthinking. Check the weather. Look at the charts. Think about the next trip. Research another boat. Explain to someone why the thing you just bought was absolutely necessary. Then, after all that, sit around and talk about sailing some more.
Some people have hobbies. Sailors have an ongoing condition. Once sailing gets into your blood, it's hard to turn it off. You can be miles from the boat and still be thinking about wind, weather, anchorages, rigging, and where you're going next.

People always say to listen to your body.
Mine keeps telling me to trade meetings for morning coffee in the cockpit, deadlines for tides, and traffic for the sound of waves against the hull. It may not be practical, but it sure is persistent.

There are a lot of ways to measure wealth, but sailors tend to keep a different ledger. A perfect evening at anchor goes pretty high on the list.
Two mugs in the cockpit. A blanket over your knees. The last light on the water. The boat gently turning with the breeze. Someone beside you who doesn’t need noise or a full itinerary to feel like the day was well spent.
The richest moments rarely look impressive from the outside. They look like sitting still, listening to water against the hull, and sharing silence with someone who understands why this is enough.

Thirty minutes of work, then thirty years on a sailboat. Honestly, it’s the only burnout cure that makes sense.
Sure, the stress doesn’t disappear completely. It just turns into rigging checks, bilge mysteries, anchor alarms, and “quick fixes” that somehow take all weekend.
But when your break room is the cockpit and the wind starts moving through the rigging, the whole ridiculous plan feels perfectly reasonable.
