Easttopics is dedicated to the promotion of the Eastern European contemporary art field.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Easttopics launched in 2013, led by young art professionals based in Hungary and Serbia and dedicated to the promotion of the Eastern European contemporary art field. Working as a think tank for the Eastern European art communities, Easttopics is a genuinely interdisciplinary cooperative which goal is to draw the Eastern contemporary art field and the international art scene closer to each other. This cross-border project takes form as an expanding on-line website and database focusing on the following countries: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. Easttopics aims at mapping and providing more visibility to protagonists of the Eastern European art life, should they be artists, art professionals, institutions, events or publications. It also wishes to act as a dynamic platform fostering connections, exchanges, community building, and cooperations for both practice-based and research-based projects on a local, regional, and international level. We believe that the comprehension of the Eastern European contemporary art scene requires personal contacts and experiences with our field of study. This on-going project is therefore built on the knowledge we acquire during our self-funded travels and nourished by our identification and understanding of site-specific and situation-specific questions, topics, issues addressed by the art field in each of these countries. Echo Location is part of third edition of the Nine Elephants festival, titled “Everything We Do”. The theme connects the city to our actions—from everyday activities and micro-gestures, through the city as a place of work and learning, to the better things we could do but, for some reason, do not. Between habit and radical change, between economic labor and invisible care, unfolds a broad ecology of interactions that shape the city as it is today, while also revealing what it could become.

Title: What Happens on Earth Stays on Earth

In 2015, it was proposed that the Anthropocene (the current era in which human activity has become the dominant force on Earth) be referred to by an alternative term – the Carbocene. (1) This term emphasizes the dependence on burning black (hydro)carbons – that is, coal and oil, solar energy “canned goods.” The fact that this is a dependency demonstrates that burning fossil fuels is not evidence of human power, but rather evidence of how deeply humanity has been influenced by the very matter and energy from the Earth’s depths. And today, humanity struggles to break free from these patterns of behaviour. The extent to which excavation and mining have impacted the environment goes without saying. It is within this fraught, carbon-heavy legacy that Magdalena Lazar situates her latest body of work.

In her latest body of work, Liivrand extends her exploration of ornamental metalwork, botanical motifs and stained-glass mosaics, incorporating subtle urban gestures inspired by graffiti into her intricate compositions.

💥 We are officially launching the next Open Call for the younger generation of women artists from Central and Eastern Europe! 🌼

The Katarzyna Kozyra Foundation and its partners invite female-identifying artists aged 35 and under from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine to apply to Secondary Archive.

What, where, when:
👉 the Open Call opens on Sep 15 and invites emerging and early-career artists working in any visual arts discipline,

👉 selected artists will be invited to join the Secondary Archive and develop their personal artist statement (both written and video format) in collaboration with the project curators,

👉 the final statements will be published on the Secondary Archive website,

👉 more information about the application requirements can be found at in the news page on the secondaryarchive.org platform
