A photo I took yesterday at Andrássy út 28 captures this unfortunately now derelict bérpalota (a Hungarian term that can be translated into English as 'rental palace' or 'rented palace'), designed by architect Henrik Schmahl and constructed in 1882 for Mihály Gschwindt. He was a Hungarian entrepreneur and industrialist who founded one of the first liquor factories in Hungary in 1854. His most popular product was Aqua Vitae, a spirit that posed significant competition to Unicum.

Gschwindt was born in Győr, Hungary, in 1817, he moved to Pest in 1846 and established a to***co shop. In the 1850s, he acquired a yeast and spirit factory on the corner of Üllői út and József körút, expanding it to include liquor and rum production.

The factory's success not only made Gschwindt wealthy but also earned him social recognition. In 1872, he was granted a noble title, complete with a coat of arms. Gschwindt's son, György, succeeded him as the head of the business. György played a key role in the construction of the family's palace on Bródy Sándor utca 12, designed by P. Tóth Sándor (I've visited the building and will share photos and stories in a future post).

Interestingly, at the entrance of the house, there is a plaque on the ground stating that it was built by a certain Lee...? in 1875. Both pieces of information are incorrect. Despite being brought to light by Judit N. Kósa in the Népszava four years ago, the plaque remains unchanged.
