Our PhD candidate and external lecturer, 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨, recently attended the international conference “𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐺𝑙𝑜𝑏𝑎𝑙 𝐶𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒𝑠” hosted by Sofia University 𝑆𝑡. 𝐾𝑙𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑂ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑠𝑘𝑖.

Milson presented his joint research with Alima Maligenova, which is inspired by her Master's thesis project and TDK paper that he supervised, titled 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐴𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑒𝑠. The study examines how public figures handle their image on Instagram during crises, showing that sincere apologies (mortification) resonate most with audiences, while denial strategies often lead to negative feedback.

We're excited to share the latest publication from our 𝐏𝐡.𝐃. 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐫, 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐨, in the Brazilian journal "𝑃𝐴𝑈𝐿𝑈𝑆: 𝑅𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎 𝑑𝑒 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑐̧𝑎̃𝑜 𝑑𝑎 𝐹𝐴𝑃𝐶𝑂𝑀". This paper, based on part of the data collected during his Ph.D. research, explores the field of visual mobile communication.

Through focus groups with 43 young people from 20 countries, Veloso discusses how smartphone cameras function as extensions of our bodies, tools for everyday tasks, and channels for interpersonal visual connection.

The qualitative study highlights how these devices go beyond photography, serving as translators, mirrors, and even tools for augmented reality. Using thematic analysis, he explored unique ways these visual interactions shape our connections with the world—and with ourselves.

We are happy to share, that our doctoral student, 𝐀𝐢𝐳𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐚 recently publised a book chapter titled 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑜𝑥 𝑜𝑓 𝑅𝑢𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑀𝑖𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑃𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠: 𝑈𝑛𝑐𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 in the volume 𝑈𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆ℎ𝑖𝑓𝑡𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑀𝑖𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝐺𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒: 𝑀𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑠, 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑖𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠.

Her chapter is dedicated to the overview of the Russian migration policies over the last decade where she claims that although Russia remains a significant destination for migrants from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) due to better living standards and economic opportunities, its approach to migration governance is fraught with contradictions and policy gaps. She argues that despite attempts to “liberalize” the law the policies are primarily characterized by restrictive measures and a focus on combating illegal migration influenced by nationalist discourse, whilst frequent changes in the migration procedures as well as inconsistencies lead to unintentional law violations and corruption.

The volume, prepared by 10 international researchers examines key developments, challenges, and unique aspects of migration governance in various countries, offering different perspectives for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners.
