Today, August 20, is one of the most important national holidays in Hungary. It is the Day of the Foundation of the Hungarian State, celebrating King Stephen I, the founder of the Hungarian state.🎉
But August 20 is also a celebration of something very close to Hungarian hearts: food.
One of the traditions of August 20 is the celebration and blessing of the New Bread . 🥖The bread is traditionally made from the newly harvested wheat of the year, symbolizing the harvest, abundance and hope for the year ahead.
For visitors discovering Hungarian culture and Hungarian food, this is a beautiful example of how closely food is connected to Hungarian history and traditions.
And there is another delicious August 20 tradition: every year, Hungary chooses its National Cake of Hungary.🍰
In 2026, the competition was held for the twentieth time. The winning cake is called Bíborfehér. This year’s competition focused on two classic Hungarian ingredients: a traditional Hungarian curd cheese, and sour cream.
Hungary also chooses a Sugar-Free Cake of Hungary every year. In 2026, the winner is Szilvafácska. The cake combines plum with walnuts, milk chocolate, cinnamon and green tea.
Both cakes can be tasted around Hungary from August 20, making this national holiday a particularly good time for food lovers to discover modern Hungarian pastry.

Sometimes the topics we discuss around our dinner table are not really about Hungary at all.

This summer, one of the most important conversations in Hungary is about something that affects all of us: drought, extreme heat, climate change and water scarcity.🪾🌞💦

The Danube River, which is such an important part of life in Budapest, has reached exceptionally low water levels. The consequences go far beyond beautiful views along the river. Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which produced around 45% of the country's electricity in 2025, depends on the Danube for cooling.

So suddenly, something that might seem like a local Hungarian story becomes a much bigger question:

What happens when climate change begins to affect the infrastructure we depend on every day?

This is exactly the kind of current topic we love discussing with our guests.

Our Budapest home restaurant experience is not a formal tour or a history lecture. I have found an interesting article about the history of our housing estate. 😍Most of the information were known by me, but there was an interesting one I was wondered: the house we run our home restaurant was the building where the very first inhabitant mooved in!🔑 What a story! 😁Last year it has been coated with isolation and new facade, so it looks nice, isn't it?

Since we have started our love project, this was the very first occasion that our nice guests asked us to participate in a commone grace before dinner. And it was really heartwarming as they said thanks for their new Hungarian friends (us), the nice hospitality and the new, delicious dishes they could taste. We told them about the religious history of Hungary which has been rolled back during communism. I for instance was baptised in secret by my grandma's request, as both my parents worked for the state or local municipality and they couldn't efford to baptise their children. And we still feel the aftereffect of this Era.. 🍲🍷🇭🇺

Our guests spend more than three hours with us, while we discuss several topics. Current political situation comes up almost every time, they are interesting in Hungarian special political situation and want to inform direcly from locals. We often talk about the US and European issues, as well, and we really enjoy changing different point of views. And now, after a few hours of Hungarian elections I have got two nice messages from US which shows these discussions leave deep impressions in our guests. Well, the show must go on, and we hope, on a more democratic way. 🍲🍷🇭🇺
