As global demand for cobalt and nickel has increased in recent years, the 6 million km2 Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean has also attracted significant interest. The limited knowledge we possessed about the biodiversity of the potential metal deposit, however, makes it difficult to understand the exact consequences of possible extraction in this pristine environment. To address this problem, a complex checklist was compiled and analysed by an international team of researchers, drawing together data from various expeditions in the region. This comprehensive document reports on more than 5,578 different species, 88-92% of which were previously unknown to science, and a significant proportion of which are found exclusively in this area. It is our shared responsibility to ensure that, as we move deeper into the unique ecosystem of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone and step by step towards the limits of the potential of deep-sea mining, we also protect the integrity of this natural environment.

World Soil Day is a UN initiative that is held on the 5th of December each year. On this occasion, the critical role of soil in sustaining life on earth is highlighted, with a special focus on its relationship to food production. But its importance goes much wider than that: soil is a key factor in the fight against global warming thanks to its carbon sequestration capacity, it purifies water through physical, electrical and microbial processes, making it nature's greatest filter, and healthy soil also acts as a reservoir to prevent droughts and floods. Moreover, if we look at it as a micro-ecosystem, just one square metre of healthy soil is home to a billion different species, from micro-organisms to mammals.

Thanks to initiatives such as the World Soil Day celebrated today, we think of soil less and less as a mass of dirt beneath our feet. It is vital to our own well-being and the health of our planet that we value and protect it - its role in achieving sustainable development is more important than most realise.

Professor José Vargas-Hernandez, researcher of BC4LS, gave a lecture organised jointly with the MNB Education Club entitled " Green human resources management and green transformational leadership” to the students of Budapest University of Technology and Economics on 25th of October.

In his lecture, he analized the implications among the variables of green culture pro-environmental behaviors and organizational sustainability on green human resources and green transformational leadership. He concluded that green organizational culture leading to pro-environmental behaviors in sustainable organizations require the support of green human management and green transformational leadership.

José Vargas-Hernandez professzor, a BC4LS kutatója az MNB Oktatási Klubbal közös szervezésben tartott órát „Zöld vállalati kultúra és zöld humánerőforrás-menedzsment” címmel a Budapesti Műszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem hallgatói számára október 25-én.

Előadásában elemezte a környezetbarát viselkedés és a szervezeti fenntarthatóság változói közötti hatásokat. A professzor arra a következtetésre jutott, hogy a fenntartható szervezetekben a környezetbarát viselkedéshez vezető zöld szervezeti kultúra megvalósításában elengedhetetlen a zöld humán menedzsment (green human management) és a zöld átalakító vezetés (green transformational leadership) támogatása.

In the course of our daily lives, packaging materials enable us to store, protect and transport goods. They are present at every stage of the value chain, from the manufacturer to the consumer. But they also have a huge environmental impact. As regards the use of new materials, 40% of the plastic and 50% of the paper used in the EU is destined for packaging, while at the end of the life cycle, packaging accounts for 36% of municipal waste.

These worrying figures have led the organisers of European Waste Reduction Week to choose packaging as this year's topic. Taking place during the last week of November, the organisers of the 15-year-old initiative will focus on a different element of the waste generation process each year, under the themes of reducing consumption, reusing products and materials and recycling waste. As the annual amount of packaging material per capita in the EU has also increased dramatically over the last decade (it is around 173 kg per capita), it has become important to raise the visibility of the problem in the coming years.

Encouragingly, the European Commission set a target in December 2020 that all packaging in the EU should be reusable or recyclable by 2030 to reduce packaging waste - an important step towards a viable circular economy that can be achieved in the foreseeable future.

Ugyanakkor óriási környezeti terhelést is jelentenek.

24/11/2023

As a counterpart to Black Friday, this year's Buy Nothing Day on 24 November will encourage consumers to take a 24-hour break from shopping, while also highlighting the environmental impact of shopping. The aim of the global movement is to encourage more members of civil society to attempt to temporarily stop shopping or to publicly advocate the sustainability values it stands for.

The impact of overconsumption on our planet and the environmental dangers it poses have become increasingly evident in recent decades - and this is having a serious impact on the economies and societies of developing countries. The message of Buy Nothing Day is that we can all contribute to tackling the crisis with a few proactive measures. Such steps could include reducing the purchase of single-use products, switching to packaging-free products or even buying recycled/durable clothing as opposed to less sustainable alternatives of the fast fashion industry.

-

Az idén november 24-ére eső vásárlásmentes világnap a black friday ellenpólusaként 24 órás vásárlási szünetre ösztönzi a fogyasztói társadalmat, miközben a vásárlással járó környezeti hatásokat is a közgondolkodás fókuszába helyezi.

Professor José Vargas-Hernandez, researcher of BC4LS, gave a lecture entitled " Sustainability and Green Socio-ecosystem Resilience: A conceptual view " to the students of the John von Neumann’s MNB Institute (MNB Intézet) on 17th of October.

In his lecture, he emphasized that humanity is facing a series of important challenges, global warming being one the most important. Consequently, sustainability and resilience have become key elements in providing a better response to the crisis and, in maintaining an equilibrium between ecology, economics and various social domains. He believes that the design and use of urban land should consider the inclusion of a multifunctional green infrastructure to obtain different benefits, from ecosystem services to value creation. According to the professor, the urban land-use planning system contributes to economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability, while biodiversity is able to provide renewal and reorganization capacities for changes in social-ecosystems.

José Vargas-Hernandez professzor, a BC4LS kutatója „A fenntarthatóság és a zöld társadalmi-ökoszisztéma rugalmassága: A koncepcionális szemlélet” címmel tartott órát a Neumann János Egyetem MNB Tudásközpont - Fenntartható Pénzügyek Központ (MNB Intézet) hallgatói számára október 17-én.
