Marché Hypolite also known as the Marché En Fer’ (Iron Market) is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Port-au-Prince. Built in the late 19th century under the presidency of Florville Hypolite, the market was intended to serve as a central hub for trade and commerce. Its distinctive iron structure was reportedly first manufactured in France, possibly for a railway station or a market in Cairo, Egypt, but it was ultimately rerouted and assembled in Haiti in 1891.
Though damaged by fire and earthquakes over the years, the market remains a beloved symbol of Haitian identity and an enduring landmark of economic and social exchange.

Mesye ak Madan Colo
Mesye Colo was a fictional character from Haitian popular culture, widely known for his comedic sketches on radio and television in the 1980s and 1990s. He was portrayed as a witty, sometimes grumpy, working class Haitian man. Through humor, Mesye Colo addressed everyday issues that resonated with many Haitians such as family life, politics, social tensions, and economic struggles. The character became iconic for capturing the spirit, frustrations and resilience of the Haitian people in a light hearted, yet meaningful way.
His bust is located next to the Sylvio Cator Stadium.
Madan Colo, whose name was Clorinde, holds a special place in the Haitian cultural memory. She was portrayed as a spirited market woman, sharp witted and full of life. Her statue stands in the heart of Bel-Air and was originally a fountain constructed in the 19th century under the leadership of President Fabre Nicolas Geffrard, providing access to fresh, portable water.
Bel-Air was once considered the heart of Port-au-Prince, a vibrant, bustling neighborhood where merchants, families and visitors gathered daily.
The statue of Madan Colo, was a symbolic landmark that let one know they had arrived in one of our city’s most lively and historically rich area of our capital city.
