An extension agent with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) leads a workshop on how farmers can adapt their practices to survive in an era of increased climate-related risks. Dozens of CRS farm advisers are attending the multi-day workshop this week in Jérémie, Haiti.

They are being assisted by AREA team members who have partnered with CRS to introduce a new approach farmers can use to adapt to climate change — called Participatory Integrated Climate Services for Agriculture (PICSA). After the training, the farm advisers will go to rural areas to teach farmers to use PICSA concepts and critical information and decision-making tools to increase their resilience. The USAID-funded AREA project recognizes the critical role women play in agriculture. That’s why we support women like Marie Darline Dorval. She is one of 25 Haitian scholars - including 13 women - sponsored by the U.S. Government to earn Master of Science degrees in agricultural sciences at the University of Florida and Louisiana State University. After she graduated from UF last year, Marie Darline returned to Haiti and started a job as a researcher and teacher at Haiti's Quisqueya University. She says her duties are directly related to her master’s work to examine the use of modern technologies to accelerate the breeding cycles of improved sorghum. AREA recently held a four-day virtual conference aimed at inspiring women college students to become entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. Haitian entrepreneurs and development specialists made presentations on topics including ensuring the financial stability of a startup, resources for Haitian entrepreneurs and a case study of a Haitian woman who owns her own business.

Dozens of women enrolled at AREA partner agricultural colleges and universities in Haiti participated in the event, which was held on the Zoom platform. Bravo Liliane Poincon! Liliane, one of 20 AREA-supported graduates of our master of science program, was just honored with a UF/IFAS' Award for Excellence for Graduate Research.

Lilian's thesis, titled "Rural Nonprofit Organizations in Haiti: Gender, Power and Perceived Benefits of Membership," explored how gender and power differences affect women who are members of rural nonprofit associations in Haiti. Read her thesis here: http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UFE0055911/00001

In addition, Liliane developed recommendations on how the USAID-funded and UF-managed AREA Feed the Future Haiti Project and other projects can enhance the benefits to women in agriculture and rural development programs.

A native of Haiti, Lilian is one of just three winners of IFAS' Award for Excellence in Graduate Research. Studying in the Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences, Lilian graduated with a master's in August; Dr. Mickie Singer served as the chair of her thesis committee.

Typically, IFAS recognizes awardees at our annual research awards ceremony, but because of precautions surrounding COVID-19, we can't meet in person. Please join us in congratulating Lilian and the other awardees!

Dr. Bénédique Paul, academic coordinator of Haiti’s only MBA program - at the Université Notre Dame d’Haiti - says “innovation in agriculture is an absolute necessity” for Haiti to reduce its chronic food insecurity and improve the livelihoods of Haitians.

His keynote speech kicked off the second day of AREA’s International Agricultural Research Conference in Pétion-Ville, Haiti.

About 150 scholars, researchers and agricultural development experts attended the conference, which was sponsored by the University of Florida-managed AREA project.

Paul, a specialist in agricultural economics and a leader at one of AREA’s key university partners, said the USAID-funded project is an example of the capacity-building Haiti needs: by joining forces, researchers and scholars at the University of Florida and at educational and governmental institutions in Haiti and elsewhere can improve agricultural education and train Haitians to apply innovations that can increase farm productivity and build Haiti’s economy. “Agriculture touches almost all of the sustainable development goals,” he said. “The agriculture of tomorrow will not be done only in rural areas. The agriculture of tomorrow will be multidisciplinary.”
