News Editor
Job Summary:
The Haitian Times (https://haitiantimes.com/)—an English-language digital news publication based in Brooklyn, New York—is seeking a freelance, part-time News Editor based in the U.S. The successful candidate will have solid news judgment and a good sense of narrative storytelling to shepherd pieces from ideation to publication. Working virtually, you will plan, coordinate, review and edit articles, photo galleries, video/audio scripts and other content about Haiti and Haitian communities across the diaspora with respect, context and nuance.
Key Responsibilities:
Coordinate the digital publishing cycle for snappy dailies and weekly feature stories
Assign and edit stories based on our preferred storytelling and culturally fluent style
Edit drafts from freelancers and contributors for accuracy, tone and grammar
Oversee layout (copy, artwork, design, photography) for posting online
Assist with recruiting and managing a team of writers, reporters and photographers working remotely in multiple locations
Liaise with staff writers and contributors, other editors, videographers, photographers and visualization team to plan and design layouts
Coordinate with social media staff and marketing to amplify special projects
Post pieces or preview posts as needed
Comply with business, media and ethical guidelines
Meet deadlines and budget requirements
Requirements and skills
Ability to work early morning or late evening on weekdays, 15-20 hours per week
Proven experience as an Editor for digitally published work
Strong writing/editing/proofreading skills, knowledge of AP Style
Ability to meet deadlines, especially when working with imperfect or incomplete information, in a virtual environment
Deep respect for cultures and the experiences of immigrants
Understanding of Haiti, Haitian culture and Haitian Creole a plus
Ability to coach writers and storytellers across various media formats
Proficiency in Google Workspace, MS Office, WordPress and other publishing tools
Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices for digital publications
Excellent English skills
Ability to use Google Translate, AI and innovations
BS degree in Journalism or in related field
Salary: $1,500 to $2,500 per month, commensurate with experience.

Synopsis:
The Heroes of the Massacre River is a compelling documentary that chronicles the stories of the pioneers behind the construction of the historic Canal Ouanaminthe—a project that united Haitians across the nation and the diaspora. This groundbreaking film celebrates the efforts of key figures, including Angie Clervil, Dr. Bertrhude Albert, Dr. Naismy-Mary Fleurant, Architect Wideline Pierre, Economist Etzer Emile, and dedicated canal workers Milourie Sylfrard, Theodore Johnson, and Joseph Pressoir.
The documentary was brought to life by an extraordinary production team: Joseph Convengton (Director of Photography), Jean-Ricardo Compère (Drone and Camera), Casimir Fanfan (Camera), Emmanuel “Mannobeats” Pierre (Score and Sound Arrangement), Vox Sambou (Music), ChartVisual (VFX), Akomicsart (Art), Angie Bell, and Atizan (Logistics and Coordination).
