Dojo Kun (道場訓) are the training principles or rules of conduct recited in a karate dojo.
They guide behavior, attitude, and mindset, both inside and outside the dojo.
In traditional Japanese martial arts—especially Shotokan / JKA karate—the Dojo Kun emphasizes character development, not just physical technique.
1. Seek perfection of character.
→ Always work to become a better person, not just a better fighter.
2. Be faithful
→ Be honest, loyal, and sincere—to your dojo, instructors, and yourself.
3. Endeavor
→ Put in your best effort; never quit when training gets hard.
4. Respect others
→ Show courtesy, humility, and kindness to everyone.
5. Refrain from violent behavior
→ Karate is for self-control and self-defense, never aggression.
When Is the Dojo Kun Recited?
Typically:
• At the end of class
• Students line up in seiza
• Recited together, often led by the senior student
• Sometimes said in Japanese, then English
⸻
Purpose of the Dojo Kun
• Builds discipline and humility
• Reminds students karate is a way of life
• Encourages ethical behavior outside the dojo
• Connects modern practice to traditional values
