THE BEGINNING OF SELF-DELUSION
(excerpt from book The Awakened Man)
Through this naming, defining, categorizing we classify a transient phenomenon in the register of thought concepts (nomen) and we give it an apparent detachment from the whole of reality, we give it individuality with all its attributes and seeming permanence.
This is the beginning of self-delusion: the replacement of phenomenon with nomen, fleeting phenomena with a permanent term, a being for a name, the replacement of a thread in the infinite and dynamic cosmic weave with the separate tapestry of thought which we will triumphantly expose in the imaginary gallery of exhibits and which in reality do not exist anywhere except in our minds.
By giving transient phenomena an apparent conceptual permanence, man unconsciously believes that he is ensuring that same permanence for himself, in this or another world, in this or another form of existence.
But if we were to try to see each individual
phenomena as it really is (in the moment of transience
and change) without assigning it a name and the associated attributes, we might succeed in experiencing it in its essence: as dynamic consciousness/energy which constantly, continually
moves, creates, scatters, in short plays by creating, reshaping,
dissolving this world of dreams.
