"It has been an interesting experience because we worked together and discussed the concerns and issues such as discrimination. I feel I am learning what it means to be part of the community and talk to the people".
"We also improved our relationship with the teacher, we now feel we have a more reciprocal relationship in which we have room to say what we deem as important".
These are students' voices regarding one of the projects and best practices presented in the BRAVEdu Hand Book "Breaking the poverty taboo - Creative ideas for mitigating the effects of poverty: school based activities".

P**a Grammar School implemented a project called “I see a human” with the goal of directing and empowering teachers to talk to students about economic differences, as well as to solve problems that arise from those differences.
The project team stated that among other goals, they wanted to encourage the students to raise awareness of the prejudice and stereotypes that arise from distinct differences, as well as to increase a sense of responsibility for their own behaviour.

"In this project, children from communities experiencing significant hardship conducted their own community research, exploring local people’s social networks, feelings of loneliness and emotional well-being. As the project progressed, the children’s mental well-being improved through the process of having their voices heard – especially by those in positions of power locally."
Child poverty is at a 20-year high – but in one English community, children themselves are intervening
Poverty leaves people feeling unable to take responsibility for their future – but community programmes can empower young people to take control.

What does research say about the impact of poverty on the socio-emotional development of students and, consequently, on school success?
Can schools do something to help their students achieve their full potential despite the socio-economic background?
Why should we be careful with charitable actions targeting students with lower socio-economic status?
These are some of the questions that the BRAVEdu consortium wanted to answer in the Handbook "Breaking the poverty taboo - Creative ideas for mitigating the effects of poverty: school-based activities", the second main output of the BRAVEdu project.
The publication features workshops and activities tailored for teachers, parents and students to support them, different co-actors in the education process, in tackling effects of the difference in the socio-economic status in their own schools, as well as the local community.
The handbook covers topics of self-reflection, positive self-perception, recognition of personal talents, defining one’s own goals, encouraging aspirations, empathy, togetherness, all of which have one aim and that is to support equity at classroom and school level.
