Pinuccio Sciola (1942–2016) was a Sardinian artist, sculptor, and muralist best known for his groundbreaking work with “sound stones.” In the 1990s, Sciola discovered a fascinating property in certain limestone and basalt rocks : they resonate when rubbed or gently struck. He began sculpting these stones with grooves, cuts, and textures designed to awaken their natural vibrations. The result was his series of “pietre sonore” sound stones that produce organic, tribal, almost cosmic tones, blending percussion with the voice of the earth. Sciola didn’t see stone as cold or inert. To him, it was alive, full of memory, and carried the soul of the Earth. “Stone is the skeleton of the Earth. It holds a sonic memory that humans can awaken.” 03/08/2025
