Five Croatian verbs, and why you never need the word "I" 🗣️

🗨️ Govorim — I speak
Govorim malo hrvatski. — I speak a little Croatian. This sentence alone changes how people treat you.

🧠 Razumijem — I understand
Razumijem, ali ne govorim dobro. — I understand, but I don't speak well.

🏠 Živim — I live
Živim u Njemačkoj. — I live in Germany.

💼 Radim — I work
Radim od devet do pet. — I work nine to five.

✈️ Putujem — I travel
Putujem u Hrvatsku svako ljeto. — I travel to Croatia every summer.

The ending already says who's doing it, so ja (I) is optional. You only add it for contrast: Ja radim, ti spavaš.

Bakeries here open around 6am ☀️
and there's one on almost every street.
Most people don't eat breakfast at home — they stop at the pekara on the way to work. 🥐

It's counter service.
You point, you say how many, you pay, you eat it standing outside or walking. 🚶
A kifla costs well under a euro, burek around two. 💶
Cash still works everywhere, cards mostly.

If you order burek you'll be asked sa sirom ili s mesom — cheese or meat. 🧀🥩 That's the only decision you have to make.

Five ways to agree with someone without agreeing at all 😌

🤷 Kako hoćeš — However you want
Warm with a smile. Said flat, it's a warning.

😐 Svejedno mi je — I don't care
Literally "it's all the same to me". Nobody who says this means it.

🫱 Nema veze — No problem
Literally "there's no connection". Covers both a genuine "don't worry about it" and a cold "drop it".

🙄 Ti to najbolje znaš — You know better
Almost never a compliment.

🚪 Radi šta hoćeš — Do what you want
Šta is the spoken form. In writing it's što.

If you actually do mean it, say Meni je svejedno, biraj ti. That one reads as sincere.

Which one is used in your language too? 👇

Croatians rarely end a conversation by resolving it. 🤷

There's a whole set of phrases for closing a topic while leaving it unsolved,
and they get used constantly — about work, weather, money, family.

It's not pessimism exactly.
It's a way of saying "this is out of our hands" that everyone recognises and nobody argues with.
Say one of these and the subject is closed. 🔒

Kako je, tako je accepts something.
Ma pusti refuses to discuss it.
Bilo pa prošlo means stop bringing it up. 🇭🇷

Six ways to call someone an idiot in Croatian, sorted roughly by how much damage they do 🫠

🙃 Budala — fool
The mildest one. Comes from Turkish budala, one of hundreds of Turkish words left in Croatian after 400 years of Ottoman neighbours. Friends use it on each other daily.

🪵 Tupan — di**it
From tup, meaning blunt or dull. Exactly the same image as English "dull" or German "stumpf" — a mind that doesn't cut.

🧱 Glupan — dumb one
Built straight from glup (stupid). Croatian turns adjectives into people by adding -an: glup → glupan, lud → ludan.

🌾 Seljačino — country bumpkin
From seljak (villager). This one is about manners, not intelligence — someone loud, rude, no idea how to behave. Note the -o ending: that's the vocative, the form used only when shouting at someone.

🐐 Papak — literally "hoof"
Zagreb slang. A hoof, as in the animal kind. Means clueless, tacky, out of his depth. Very common, quite cutting.

🧨 Kreten — complete idiot
From the medical term "cretin", same root as in English and German. The heaviest one here. Don't use it on someone you just met.

The pattern worth noticing: Croatian insults come from everywhere — Turkish, Latin, and the countryside. That's basically the country's history in six words.

Which one sounds closest to something in your language? 👇

Croatians talk loudly. 📢

Not because something is wrong — that's just the normal volume.

Two people can sound like they're about to fight and be discussing where to park. 😅

The words don't carry the politeness.
English pads everything with "would you mind" and "sorry to bother you".
Croatian leaves that out and puts it in the tone instead.
So the exact same sentence can be warm or angry, and you only know from how it's said. 🎭

If someone says one of these to you, they're almost certainly not upset with you. 🇭🇷

The complete arc of one night out in Dalmatia, in five sentences 🍺

🍻 Još jedno pivo — Another beer
Još means "more". It works with everything: još malo vina, još jedan kruh.

💶 Ja plaćam — I'm paying
Nobody splits the bill to the cent here. One person takes the whole round, someone else takes the next one. Saying this and then letting it slide is a small offence.

🥴 Mrtav sam pijan — I'm dead drunk
A woman says mrtva sam pijana. Croatian adjectives change with gender, always.

🤢 Muka mi je — I feel sick
Literally "nausea is to me". Croatian handles feelings this way: hladno mi je (I'm cold), drago mi je (nice to meet you).

🙃 Sutra prestajem — Tomorrow I quit
Nobody has ever meant this sentence.

Lunch is the main meal. 🍲
Kitchens do their real cooking in the middle of the day, which is why jelo dana — the dish of the day — is usually better and cheaper than anything on the regular menu. 💶

A few things that surprise people.
Nobody brings your bill until you ask ⏳,
and nobody will hurry you out;
the table is yours for as long as you sit there.

Tap water isn't served 💧,
you order bottled and say whether you want it sparkling or still.

And a small draft beer is 0.3 litres, a large one 0.5. 🍺

What would you order first? 👇

If you're sitting down in a Croatian konoba for the first time, these five sentences do all the work 🇭🇷

🗣️ Što nam preporučujete? — What do you recommend?
Ask it and the waiter usually skips the tourist menu and points at whatever came off the boat this morning.

📋 Koja je dnevna ponuda? — What's the dish of the day?
The daily set meal. In Split people call it marenda, in Zagreb gablec. It's the cheapest honest food in the country, usually around €8–12.

🍺 Jedno pivo, molim — One beer, please
Jedno means "one". Two beers is dva piva, because the noun changes with the number. Croatian does that constantly.

💳 Primate li kartice? — Do you accept cards?
Literally "do you accept cards" — that's the actual phrasing. Ask before you order on the islands. Plenty of small places are still cash only.

😌 Bilo je odlično, hvala — Everything was delicious
Said on the way out, not while sitting. Tipping is usually just rounding up.

Save this for your next trip. Which one would you actually use first? 👇
