🌿27 godina Nacionalnog parka Sjeverni Velebit! 🌿

🎉 Danas smo u Krasnom sudjelovali na prvom danu trodnevne znanstvene konferencije „𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐤𝐚 𝐳𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐳𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 – 𝐎𝐝𝐫ž𝐢𝐯𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐮ć𝐧𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐡 𝐞𝐤𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐚“, koja se održava u sklopu obilježavanja Dana Nacionalnog parka Sjeverni Velebit pod sloganom „Povezujemo znanje, prirodu i ljude za održivu budućnost planina“.

💡Naša direktorica Mirna Mazija održala je stručno predavanje „𝐔𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐯𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐚ć𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐚 𝐮𝐭𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐣𝐚 𝐨𝐛𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐤𝐯𝐢 𝐧𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐣𝐞 š𝐢š𝐦𝐢š𝐚 𝐮 𝐍𝐏 𝐒𝐣𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢 𝐕𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐭“, u kojem je predstavila rezultate našeg istraživanja provedenog prošle godine. Poseban naglasak stavljen je na važnost lokvi i šumskih staništa za šišmiše te njihovu ulogu u očuvanju bioraznolikosti planinskih ekosustava.

🎂 Čast nam je sudjelovati u programu kojim se obilježava 27. obljetnica Nacionalnog parka Sjeverni Velebit, područja iznimne prirodne vrijednosti koje već desetljećima čuva jedinstvenu prirodnu i kulturnu baštinu Velebita. Želimo Nacionalnom parku Sjeverni Velebit još mnogo uspješnih godina u zaštiti prirodne baštine Velebita te zahvaljujemo na prilici da budemo dio ovog vrijednog događanja.

📅 Konferencija se nastavlja i tijekom sljedeća dva dana, a bogat program znanstvenih, stručnih i društvenih događanja otvoren je za sve zainteresirane posjetitelje.

🎉 From May 20 to 22, Opatija hosted 𝐑𝐄𝐒 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 / 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢 𝐎𝐈𝐄 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 (Renewable Energy Sources of Croatia), the largest national conference dedicated to renewable energy. Over three days, the city became a meeting point for the energy sector, bringing together experts to discuss the future of energy at a time when the topic is increasingly linked to security of supply, economic competitiveness, and affordability.

🗣️ As part of the program, our director, Mirna Mazija, participated in the panel “𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐄𝐒 – 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.”

❗ The discussion focused on a increasingly relevant question: how to accelerate the modernization of existing facilities while ensuring clear rules for spatial planning, environmental protection, and asset management throughout their entire lifecycle.

💡 The panel brought together diverse perspectives from across the sector. Alongside Mirna, the panel featured Giuseppe Costanzo (WindEurope), Branimir Ivković (ENCRO), and Margareta Premužić (Ministry of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets), with moderation by Marko Mećar (Attorney-at-Law, ZOU PVM).

𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚! 🇧🇬

🦇 From March 23–26, we were in Bulgaria to share our experience through a training session on bat research methodologies and monitoring schemes. Training was organised as part of the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐀 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 to support local research teams and strengthen their capacity for effective bat monitoring. The training was focused on defining site-specific conservation objectives and measures for areas within the Natura 2000 network.

🏞️ The training took place in the Sinite Kamani Nature Park, near the city of Sliven, where we worked together with local research teams in a mountainous setting at over 1000 m above sea level.

👥 Our visit focused on the exchange of experience and best practices, with our team contributing as external experts to support the upcoming field implementation.

💡 Through lectures and on-site field training, we presented our approach to bat monitoring, focusing on the importance of standardised surveys, modern technologies, and the use of specialised equipment, alongside practical demonstrations of mist-net setup and site selection.

❗ This collaboration contributes to a broader effort of defining species specific conservation objectives and measures within the Natura 2000 sites.

🎉 We are glad to support strengthening the research capacities of Bulgarian experts.

⭐ A challenging and exciting project lies ahead, and we wish our Bulgarian colleagues good luck in collecting new valuable data on bat populations.

🌍 Today is Earth Day. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights how collective action and strategic decisions shape the future of our environment.

🌱 The Earth is not just a habitat, but a complex system we actively influence through spatial planning, infrastructure development, and environmental management.

🦇 At the heart of a functional ecosystem are often the most overlooked species. Bats play a critical role across multiple trophic levels by:
• Regulating insect populations 🦟
• Contributing to pollination and seed dispersal 🌱
• Supporting agricultural resilience 🌾

Disruptions to bat populations can trigger cascading ecological effects, leading to increased pest pressure and loss of ecosystem services.

⚡ How do we use "Our Power"? Through expert bat monitoring in early project planning, we ensure that development is aligned with biodiversity protection. Our power lies in informed, responsible decision-making.
Protecting biodiversity is not an option, it is fundamental to maintaining a healthy planet.

Today we celebrate 5 years of Supernatural 🎉, not in an office, but exactly where we belong: out in the field, working with the species which inspire everything we do!

From late-night surveys to daytime data analysis, from wind farms to forests and caves, it’s been a journey shaped by curiosity, expertise, and a strong commitment to bat conservation 🦇

Mirna Mazija and 𝐓𝐞𝐚 𝐇𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐧 participated in the 𝟏𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, held in Zagreb from 20 to 23 November 2025.

The congress included four days of scientific sessions featuring plenary talks, oral presentations, poster sessions and round-table discussions, creating valuable opportunities for exchanging ideas and presenting the newest findings in ecology, marine biology, biology education and nature protection.

Supernatural contributed to this year’s program with the presentation:
“𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬” presented by Mirna Mazija.
Mirna presented a case study of a wind farm built in a forested area, highlighting specific impacts and possible negative effects on bat populations, and also analysing how different components of the wind farm facility additionally increase these impacts.

We were also pleased to see a presentation of research in which our colleague Tea Huten took part: “𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐞: 𝐄𝐱 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬” presented by Dijana Beneta from Zoological Garden of Zagreb.

A big thank you to the 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 and all participants for a motivating and inspiring congress. We look forward to future collaborations and continued knowledge exchange!

Recently, Tea delivered a lecture at the Little School of Mammalogy – an educational workshop organized by the Biology Student Association (BIUS).

In her presentation, she discussed recent research and monitoring of small mammals in Croatia, discussing different methods, results and outcomes of various projects. She also shared updates on small mammal taxonomy and conservation statuses, highlighting some exciting as well as concerning news.

A big thank-you to the organizers for their interest in this topic and for the invitation to present. It is always a pleasure to share knowledge with motivated students!

At the 𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 - 𝗖𝗪𝗪𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, held in Montpellier, France, from 8–12 September, our director Mirna Mazija contributed in multiple ways – as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee, as a speaker, and as a session moderator!

🦇 This August, we had the pleasure of hosting colleagues from here in Croatia, together with our partner ! 🦇

Through workshops, we discussed the history and future of bat research in Croatia, presented methods applied in current projects, and shared approaches to data analysis with a focus on renewable energy.

In the field, we worked together on acoustic monitoring, mist-netting, cave surveys, and habitat reconnaissance, exploring different parts of Croatia and its diverse bat fauna. We are also grateful to the Embassy of the Netherlands in Zagreb for hosting us and supporting our growing collaboration.

This visit followed our own exchange trip to the Netherlands in May!

Both exchanges have strengthened our expertise, broadened our perspectives, and laid the foundation for exciting joint projects ahead!

As part of the European Renewable Energy & Wildlife Consortium (ERWC), this collaboration will continue to grow, driving forward renewable energy development while ensuring the protection of wildlife across Europe.
