Sastoji se od jedne dvorane dimenzija 50 x 40 m uz visinu od 20 m, ulaz je širok oko 8 m, a na stropu su dva otvora koja omogućavaju ulazak dovoljne količine dnevnog svijetla. Spilja se intenzivno istražuje pedesetak godina tijekom kojih je, mjestimice do dubine od 10,6 m, otkopana znatna količina raznovrsnog arheološkog materijala. Zbog prostranosti i odličnog položaja, lokalitet je konstantno na
seljen od zadnjeg ledenog do kraja brončanog doba, a povremeno sve do danas. Mnoštvo tragova života Velu spilju čini jedinstvenom vremenskom kapsulom u čijoj su unutrašnjosti arhivirani podaci o epohama i razdobljima kroz koje je civilizacija brodila posljednjih dvadesetak milenija. Putovanje kroz naslage Vele spilje je ujedno putovanje kroz vrijeme, odnosno kroz povijest ljudskog roda. Vela spila is an archaeological cave locality. It consists of only one hall, having the dimensions of 50 x 40 m, the hight of 20 m and 8 m wide entrance, with two openings on the ceiling allowing sufficient quantity of daylight into the cave. The cave has been subject to intense research over the past 50 ears, during which time a significant quantity of diverse archaeological material was excavated, sometimes to the dept of 10,6 m. Due to its spaciousness and exellent position, the locality is characterized by continuous occupation from the last Ice to the end of the Bronze Age, and occasionally up to the present day. Numerous remnants of life make Vela spila a unique time capsule, the interior of which contains information on the epochs and eras traversed by civilization over the last twenty millenniums.
