โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ‰ Planning one last pool party before summer ends? Make it a good one!

A good, but sustainable pool party doesn't have to mean boring food, complicated rules or buying a completely new set of โ€œecoโ€ products.

In fact, one of the most sustainable things you can do is much simpler:

Make sure the food you already have actually gets eaten.

It's as simple as this?

In 2022, around 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted globally.

And when we waste food, we aren't wasting only the thing sitting on the plate. We also waste some of the water, land, energy, labour and other resources used to grow, produce, process and transport it.

So here is the thinking behind our Late-Summer Pool Party Sustainable Essentials. ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ‘‡

A cooler isn't just for cold drinks. On a hot summer day, keeping perishable food properly chilled helps prevent perfectly good food from becoming unsafe and ending up in the bin.

Before you make your pool-party shopping list, open the fridge. What needs eating?
Very ripe peaches? โ†’ Smoothies.
Half a watermelon? โ†’ Fruit platter.
Opened hummus? โ†’ Snack board.
Vegetables that have seen better days? โ†’ Dips, wraps or skewers.

We often prepare a huge spread because we want the table to look abundant.
But your guests don't need to take everything at once.

One big container of cold water with ice, lemon, mint or leftover fruit + reusable cups = an easy poolside drink station. It also means everyone can pour as much as they actually want instead of opening a new drink, taking three sips and forgetting which one was theirs.

We plan what we're going to bring to the party.
We rarely plan what we're going to bring back. Pack a few reusable containers and leave some room in the cooler before you leave home.
Then, when the party ends, safe untouched food already has somewhere to go.

Send friends home with their favourites.
Turn tonight's leftover vegetables into tomorrow's lunch.

Virtual water is the water needed to grow, produce, process, package, and transport the things we use every day. It is hidden inside our food, clothes, technology, and almost every product we buy.

Your morning coffee required water to grow the coffee beans.
Your T-shirt required water to grow the cotton, dye the fabric, and manufacture it.
The food on your plate required water long before it reached your kitchen.
Even your phone has a hidden water footprint because water is used during the production of its materials and components.

We do not see this water, but that does not mean it was not used.

Virtual water helps us understand that water consumption is not only about what comes out of the tap. It is also connected to what we eat, what we wear, what we waste, and how often we replace the things we already own.

Curious about how much hidden water is behind the products you use every day? Explore the Water Footprint Networkโ€™s interactive product gallery and discover the water footprint of different foods, drinks, clothes, and everyday items here:
https://www.waterfootprint.org/resources/interactive-tools/product-gallery/ ๐ŸŒ

This does not mean we should stop buying clothes, drinking coffee, or enjoying our favourite food. It simply means becoming more aware of the real impact behind our everyday choices.

Buying only what we need, wasting less food, reusing products, and choosing more consciously can all help reduce our hidden water footprint.

Because every product has a story โ€” and somewhere in that story, water was used.

The water we cannot see still matters. ๐Ÿ’™

About ultra processed food, Europe has big differences, with several northern and western countries relying more heavily on ultra processed foods, while many southern European countries, like Portugal, Italy and Greece have lower shares of household food purchases from these products.
The Mediterranean diet is an important factor to the good results of southern countries, because emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil, and moderate amounts of fish, making it a nutritious eating pattern associated with better heart health and overall well-being.

In Europe, apps like Too Good To Go, OLIO, Karma and Phenix are already helping people rescue surplus food in a super simple way.

Instead of throwing away unsold meals, bakeries, restaurants, cafรฉs and shops can offer them through apps, often at a lower price. People get tasty food, businesses reduce waste, and the planet gets a tiny break. Win-win-win.
