The Mayan School in Tegucigalpa, Honduras opened its doors to parents and students on September 1 st, 1977. We are members of the Association of Bilingual Schools of Honduras (ABSH) and operate under the American schools’ calendar (August through June). The Mayan School was the brainchild of business partners and board members Alicia Helwig, Aída de Membreño, Irma Acosta de Fortín, Doris Morazán,
Gilberto Zúñiga, Charles Parchment, Daniel Casco, Alberto Lázarus, José Vicente Mazariegos and Guillermo Buck Idiáquez. The Mayan School original site was at Colonia Tepeyac, with 180 students enrolled in pre-school and elementary. By 1978, Seventh Grade was opened for eight students, from which we had our first five seniors and graduating class of 1984. As enrollment increased, it became mandatory to find a new building to hold the school while a permanent location was found. Our second home was the beautiful and antique quarters that at one time housed the Minor Seminary of Tegucigalpa. In 1979 the board acquired the plot of land where the school stands today. At the time, the future location of the school was considered to be “beyond city limits”, currently it’s one of the city´s fastest growing and newly developed areas. By August 1983 the first stage of construction was completed, and the school year
began on this new site, being able now to house a very large student body. Through the years, more buildings and courts were added on. When you visit The Mayan School today you will find that our campus is immense and beautiful, with distinct areas such as the Baby Jaguars building, elementary and high school buildings, auditorium, playgrounds and courts, vast gardens, parking lots, cafeteria and main office, and a great new soccer field. The Mayan School honors the principals who have guided its staff and student body through their many years of service: Mrs. Aura Julia de Matute, Mrs. Diana Piland, Mrs. Victoria de Palacios, Mr. Carlos Hector Sabillón, Mr. Wilberto Aguilar, Mr. José Marcio Búlnes, Mr. José Tulio Lagos, Mr. Felipe Soto and, our current Superintendent, Ms. Laura Elena Villeda. At The Mayan School we have always been proud of our student body, even more so of our alumni who have graduated from universities, national and abroad, earning scholarships due to high academic achievements.
