“Through small potted plants and portraits, he unveils the underlying tales of rooting and self-discovery.”

Born in Shanghai, residing in Hong Kong, and having graduated from Beijing, Wong Shun-yu has consistently pondered his own journey of growth as a ‘deep floater.’ From a young age, he accompanied his family on their ‘nomadic adventures,’ which left him with a tapestry of memories, some more disquieting than others. Silk, a delicate and gentle medium, becomes the background for his intimate musings.

Wang Shunyu’s main theme is landscape, deeply influenced by Chinese urban legends and religious paintings.

“When it comes to artistic impulse, passion is necessary for creation.”

In the hands of Rainbow Leung, a jackfruit tree took root in her beloved hometown of Ha Wo Che. Through painting, she seeks to extend her connection with the tree, and engage in playful battles with ants. Additionally, she playfully and enchantingly invites readers into delightful conversations about ink art through the endearing comic characters from her column ‘Cat and Dog never die,’ featured in a serialized four-panel strip comic.

Rainbow Leung, a graduate of the Department of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the School of Creative Media of the City University of Hong Kong, specializes in detailed and vivid illustrations.

“Maybe we have all experienced something familiar and resonate with each other.”

With keen observation, Leung Lai-man responds to modern life through her meticulous depictions of characters in her creations. Stepping into a cinema to watch a movie is akin to carving out a small pocket of personal space within a public setting, momentarily escaping from reality. Strangers collectively focus on the lives of characters unfolding on the screen, sharing laughter and shedding tears together, immersed in their own inner worlds, often oblivious to the people around them. Leung, through her skillful artistic space design, condenses the myriad facets of human existence onto the paper of her precise and refined character portrayals.

Based in Hong Kong, Jess Leung is a Chinese fine-brush painter and visual Arts graduate of Hong Kong Baptist University.

“If the city is the rice paper, the dust of the world is the ink while the hydraulic monitor is the brush dipped in water.”

Ling Chung-wan endeavours to cleanse the environment as he creates a colossal abstract ink painting. Within the spaces of Hong Kong’s old public housing, he deliberately chooses to paint circular forms, coinciding with the symbolic patterns of Eastern philosophy found in the works of modernist art pioneers.

Artist Ling Chung-wan Kevin was born in Hong Kong in 1994. His works express concern about the relationship and connection in the community and a sense of curiosity.

“Overwhelming influx of information in urban environments prompted the artist to choose a minimalist calligraphic form”

Ho Wai-lam, the artist from the post-millennial era, remains undistracted as he embraces the path of simplicity through the art of calligraphy. Within the interplay of black and white lines, he inscribes his personal understanding, experiences, and emotions regarding contemporary poetry and popular song lyrics. The free-flowing rhythms of the new poetry, with its innovative language concepts, find expression in his calligraphy. Meanwhile, the melodies of popular music, seemingly capturing an intangible collective sentiment that resonates with urban dwellers, evoke a sense of weightlessness.

Specializing in Chinese calligraphy with 12 years practical experience, Ho Wai-lam has dabbled in Western art forms including sculpture, paintings and drawings and has expressed himself through traditional Chinese calligraphy in contemporary ways.

“Chinese landscape painting is not merely scenery, nor is it a deliberate reshaping of the environmentfrom a specific perspective.”

Lau Ching-wa’s “If It Should Ever Come”documents a series of mesmerizing light and shadow transformations in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, evoking a similar sense of exploration in nature. In another artwork, she meticulously hand-draws sixty ‘snowflakes’ and transforms them into a sixty-frame-per-second video, emulating the random pixelation reminiscent of analog TV screens devoid of signal—resembling delicate texture strokes and smudging techniques.

Born in 1991 in Hong Kong, Lau Ching-wa was the selected artist of Tai Kwun Contemporary Artists’ Studio Residency and awarded the Nanying Prize from Taiwan.

“In this digital age, how can the visual impact of digital imagery, the
computational algorithms of media art, and the aesthetics of mechanical operation carry the spirit of inkpainting?”

In Chan Long-fung’s interactive installations, he draws inspiration from modern linguistics concepts of the system of written symbols, presenting the relationship between ‘sound-image’ and linguistic symbols. His works envision a departure from traditional calligraphy as a form of textual art. Through audience participation, the written text becomes a living organism, while the interplay of virtual and real within the circuits continues to convey various messages.

Chan Long-fung is a local new media artist who explores human experience including life & death, consciousness and time in his works.

“The core issue that calligraphers face is how they interpret calligraphy’s history.”

Fung Yee-lick’s artistic creation returns to the essence of comprehending the relationship between paper, brush, and ink, reflecting the subtle and irreproducible changes in human consciousness and physical state. As he lifts a brush to draw a single line, it ignites the primal impulse to contemplate the essence of self and the world.

Fung Yee-lick is an ink and mixed media artist. He is now teaching for the Diploma in Chinese Calligraphy programme at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education.

Cai Jian’s artwork “HoldHoldHold,” is made from fiberglass, aluminum, and stainless steel. It proudly stands in the center of the ‘Labyrinth’ ground installation, transforming the Victorian-style pillars of Pier 7 into the window frames of the garden and incorporating the Victoria Habour view into the framed scene.

Cai Jian, born in 1993 in Guangdong, holds a Master’s in Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Through repeated depictions of daily objects and cultural symbols, Cai unfolds his exploration of materials, images, and contemporary visual culture.
