This workshop focused on “Build a Smart & Sustainable North” under the “Greening the Northern Metropolis” initiative 🌿🏗️
Participants explored sustainable urban design, smart technologies, and green innovation for a future-ready built environment 💡♻️

🎉👏 Big Congratulations to BEEE Student ! 👏🎉

We are delighted to share that Mr LAM Ka Ho has won the First Runner-up Prize 🏆 in the 2nd International Competition on AI in Education 2026 by AIREA 🤖📚

His project, “Tailored Multi-Agent AI Platform Enhancing Flipped Classroom Effectiveness and Cultivating Critical Thinking for Hong Kong Higher Education,” impressed the judges with its creativity and innovation 💡✨

Supervised by Prof. Cynthia Hou, this achievement reflects LAM’s dedication and passion for advancing AI in education 🚀🎓

🌟 BEEE Study Tour to Chongqing 🌟

From 24 to 30 July 2026, 13 undergraduate and 3 postgraduate students from BEEE joined a 7-day study tour to Chongqing University, China 🇨🇳✨ Led by Prof. You Ruoyu and sponsored by the PRC Ten Thousand People’s Scheme and BEEE, the tour offered students valuable opportunities for academic exchange, site visits, and cultural exploration 📚🏫🌏

Highlights included campus and lab visits, a transportation system tour, a lecture on building fire safety and ground-source heat pump systems, and visits to Ciqikou Ancient Town and various on-site learning locations 🔬🚆🏮

The tour broadened students’ horizons and inspired learning beyond the classroom 🌟

PolyU’s Prof. Xiao Fu and his team at BEEE have developed an award-winning smart energy management system that can cut daily energy use by up to 40% 🔋📉✨

By combining real-time monitoring, cloud control and AI predictions 📊☁️🧠, the system helps optimise chiller operations while keeping buildings cool and comfortable 😌🌬️

🏅 The innovation won a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025 🎉🌍
It has also been successfully applied in a Hong Kong government office building, delivering impressive energy savings and better efficiency 💚🏢

Prof. Asif Sohail Usmani from BEEE has developed SureFire 💡🛡️— an intelligent forecasting tool for fire safety and emergency management in smart cities 🏙️📡

By combining real-time sensing, AI, and predictive analytics 🤖📊, SureFire helps track fire progression and support faster, smarter response decisions 🚒⏱️

It also opens the door to next-generation firefighting robots 🤖🔥👩‍🚒, paving the way for safer, more resilient, and more sustainable cities 🌱🌍

On Day 2, participants joined “Future Campus: Smart, Sustainable and Human-Centric Design” delivered by Dr Tsang Tsz Wun, Hayley, followed by hands-on laboratory activities led by the BEEE technical team 🔬💡

The sessions covered:

🌡️ Thermal comfort assessment
⚡ Energy efficiency analysis
🌬️ Indoor air quality assessment
🏡 Smart home technology demonstration

The workshop concluded with lunch 🍱 and a site visit to the Kwu Tung North and Fanling North New Development Areas Community Liaison Centre 🚌📍, where students gained first-hand insights into the planning and development of the Northern Metropolis.

Day 1 of the programme began with a project orientation and Q&A session led by Professor Jiang Liming, followed by the mini-lecture “Steering the Solar Photons for Building Energy Transition” by Ir Professor Lu Lin Vivien. After lunch, students joined two interactive workshops on Applied solar energy in buildings by Dr Gong Quan and Carbon neutrality by Dr ZHAO Jingxian. 🌱⚡
