PolyU Impact: Planetary Remote Sensing of China's Space Exploration Missions 17/07/2026

🚀 Taking Geospatial Science Beyond Earth! 🌕🔴

Ever wondered how spacecraft land safely on the uncharted terrains of the Moon and Mars? The answer lies in the cutting-edge expertise of PolyU’s Department of Land Surveying and Geospatial Science (LSGS)!

Led by Prof. WU Bo, our LSGS researchers are proving that land surveying and geospatial science aren't just for Earth—they are essential for deep space exploration.

By pushing the boundaries of planetary remote sensing, the LSGS team has developed an advanced 3D mapping model combined with AI technology to generate ultra-high-resolution topographic maps. This technology overcomes extreme space conditions—like the thin Martian atmosphere and harsh lighting at the lunar south pole—to find the absolute safest landing spots for spacecraft.

🌟 LSGS Making History in Space:
This groundbreaking LSGS-driven innovation has directly supported the Nation's historic space missions, including Chang’e-3 (嫦娥三號), Chang’e-4, Chang’e-5, and the Tianwen-1 (天問一號) Mars mission!

During the Chang’e-4 mission, the 3D mapping technologies pioneered by LSGS identified rough terrain and helped adjust the descent orbit, making the world’s first-ever successful landing on the far side of the Moon possible! 🛰️ It also safely guided the Zhurong rover (祝融號) to the surface of Mars.

Recognized by the China National Space Administration and the China Academy of Space Technology, our Department of Land Surveying and Geospatial Science is incredibly proud to continue guiding the journey to the stars. ✨
