Some people may think their impact on the ecology is negligible, so they did not pay too much attention to marine pollution issues. However, through that two field trips can show us most of the pollution come from human activities. Facing this serious problem, we cannot do nothing. Changing our habit is one of the easy ways to save the environment, for instance, use fewer plastic, clean the beach, etc. Therefore, all of us have responsibilities to protect our earth, especially the marine environment.

[PRESENT & PAST]
Jin Island looks gorgeous. It is a sea arch located in Sai Kung caused by erosion. It was named by its shape which is a hanging bell. Do you agree?

In the 1970s, the military force of British use this sea arch as a target for shooting !!! But now all the rocks in the geographical park are being protected. The water quality and the sea arch situation probably looks much better than before, What a good news to know!!

Click the link below you can see what happened in 1973!

[Other issue that we want you to know!!!]
The bottom of this picture shows what debris (eg. styrofoam, net, etc.) was found in a beach. The majority of marine debris is plastic!

Through the lectures we noticed that plastic will further decomposed into Microplastics after hundreds of years. Microplastics are small, barely visible pieces of plastic that enter and pollute the environment. Microplastics have also been detected in freshwater ecosystems and accumulate in human.

We should reduce the use of plastic products to protect our environment and the animals. So as to protect ourselves and our ocean also.

Our group mate Queenie loves the texture of the fine sand~
It is so smooth!!!

12/11/2018

In sand test experiment, we tested the sand collected in Nam Fung Wan. Four layers of sifting screen helped us to filter different size of sand.

At the end, we filtered very fine sand in the end(see picture on bottom left-hand corner).

Mission completed!

The presence of nitrates can be tested by using the color disc method.

A chemical is added to a measured amount of water which will turn a yellowish-brown color if nitrates are present in the water.

For our samples, we found out that the water contained very little amount of nitrate as the colour of water still looked like transparent.

It is important for us to keep our ocean clean!!!!!!!

[Comparison of inshore and offshore region]

Testing, one, two, three.

Our data collecting point is around 1 hour away from the Sai kung town, much less human activities were around. We observed the area without sewage plant and no greasy dirt. E-coli was not found in the water samples collected in the area close to the Bluff Island (5m and 20m).

What a clean water territory!! Hurray!!!

【What is sea cave?】

A sea cave, also known as a littoral cave, is a type of cave formed primarily by the wave action of the sea.

The primary process involved is erosion. Sea caves are found throughout the world, actively forming along present coastlines and as relict sea caves on former coastlines.

Outside the Sai Kung sea we got famous Four cave of East sea (東海四洞) in Hong Kong. Some are below let us check that out.

P.S. 東海四洞 (吊鐘洞 沙塘口洞 橫洲角洞 欖灣角洞)

[More than you expected!!]

You may thought that Hong Kong is only packed with high skyscrapers?
We can tell you it is more than you expected!!! During the boat tour we are be able to see hexagonal rock columns.

These are hundreds of millions of years old and were formed by the cooling and contracting mixture of lava, rock debris and volcanic ash. Later, consistent violent crustal movements created the twists and folds that you can now see.

Yes!!! This is the gorgeous Hong Kong marine come and figure out more.
