AAA Learning & Participation

This is an Asia Art Archive Learning & Participation platform to provide resources for learning and teaching contemporary art.

AAA’s Learning & Participation programme was established in 2007 to expand the possibilities for public interaction with the Archive. By using its unique collection as a platform for ’archive education’, AAA hopes to redefine the ways audiences might learn about contemporary art and enrich the way global art history is perceived and defined. AAA is not an educational institution, and neither does

Archives, people, stories: Digitisation at Asia Art Archive 23/12/2024

【Season's Greetings】

As the year comes to a close, we would like to express our warmest thanks to all the teachers, artist-educators, students, and partner organisations who have supported and collaborated with us for our events this year. It has been our pleasure as an archive to contribute to the development of contemporary arts education, and we are excited to see you all again next year!

Every visit to our library, every click on our website, every page read from our Collections are more than just numbers; they connect to the stories, people, and communities that fuel AAA and what we do. In the spirit of the holiday season, we hope you can celebrate this achievement with us, and share in this feeling of joy as we enter the new year!

Wishing you all a Happy Holidays!

Beyond organizing events for the public, we also wanted to take this opportunity to facilitate communication between BiSCA and the local arts community, especially considering BiSCA’s focus on socially engaged projects and art collectives. Over the course of their stay, we took BiSCA to visit a diverse line-up of cultural and art sites around Hong Kong, ending with a warm trip to Macau! Friendships and connections were formed, as everybody was kind and generous with their time, making the effort to reach out to BiSCA and make them feel welcome in our city.

Many thanks to May Fung, Siu King Chung, Jaffa Lam, Gwobean, Tang Kwok Hin, CHAT, Para Site, Tai Kwun, Hart Haus, Onebite, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, Eaton Hotel and Myland Culture for all your time and care!

For this year’s edition of the Learning Context series, AAA was delighted to invite members of the Bishkek School of Contemporary Art (BiSCA) to Hong Kong for an insightful and engaging series of talks, workshops and cultural exchanges. Our keynote talk, Methodologies of Imagination: Field Notes from Kyrgyzstan, featured critical sharing from the co-founders of BiSCA on their experience of building an art education ecology from ground-up in their country. The talk was well-attended, and respondents Yim Suifong and Anthony Leung both had thoughtful answers from our local context to contribute to the conversation.

We also conducted three workshops; two traditional Ala-Kiyiz felting experiences led by artist Oksana Kapishnikova, and one sound-video meditative experience guided by Diana Ukhina. These workshops offered a more hands-on experience of engaging with Kyrgyz culture, and attendees were all enthusiastic in their participation.

【Recap! | Educators Open House】

AAA is proud to present this year’s edition of the Educators Open House. The event featured an interactive taster session of our four newly launched Thematic Workshops and School Tours, followed by a sharing from retired Educators-in-Residence Peggy Kwan and Carmen Kwok. Participating teachers went home with fresh ideas for the classroom, and a better understanding of how archival material could be integrated into the local curriculum.

If you’re interested in signing up for our Thematic Workshops and School Tours, you can do so at https://aaa.org.hk/en/learning-participation/school-tours-workshops !

Unboxing the Archive | Artist-led Workshops for School Groups

The archival process, and indeed, the archive itself, can often seem mysterious to newcomers. How does it function? What does it remember? In this new series, Asia Art Archive invites two emerging artist-educators – Jocelin Kee and Vivian Wong – to design a set of workshops that aim to connect students to the work of documentation and preservation in Hong Kong Art History.
