Tracing a direct lineage back to the founding grandmasters of a style is a core component of traditional Chinese martial arts.

Sifu Wan Kei Ho's lineage traces back several generations through his two teachers, Lau Wai-yip and Chiu Kwok-chung, to the founder of the Northern Shaolin style (Bak Siu-lam in Cantonese), Ku Yu-cheung, the founder of the Bak-sing lineage of Choy Li Fut, Tam Sam, and the founder of Sun style Tai Chi, Sun Lu-tang.

Located in Guangzhou (southern China) in the early 1900's, Ku Yu-cheung and Tam Sam, were two incredible martial artists and great friends. Their friendship was so close they actually swapped senior students, which was unheard of at that time. Their close bond and openness to sharing their martial secrets ensured that from that point on Northern Shaolin and Bak-sing lineage Choy Li Fut would always be taught together hand-in-hand.

Ku Yu-cheung's senior student, Lung Tse-cheung, and one of Tam Sam's senior student, Lau Kam Tung, passed down their techniques as taught to them. But in respect to their two teachers they were careful to always teach their techniques and forms as separate styles, not combine them into a single system.

In Hong Kong today, practitioners of Northern Shaolin often study a little Choy Li Fut to complement their northern long arm style with southern fighting fist techniques. And likewise, students of the Bak-sing lineage of Choy Li Fut train a little northern Shaolin, to add soft energy, agile footwork and explosive kicking techniques to their training. Sifu Wan Kei Ho is lucky that he has two teachers, one from each lineage path, which provides a unique balance to the northern and southern styles he teaches.

Master Wan Kei Ho teaching circling bridge hands (kiu sau), stepping into stealing horse stance (tau ma) with tiger claw (foo-jow) - techniques from the Choy Li Fut style.

The energy generated in the circling bridge hands all comes from the core (dantien) which is rooted to the floor with a strong horse stance (sei ping ma). A strong stance, core strength, and the ability to direct energy to the forearm are the secrets to making the technique work. Arm and shoulder power alone are not strong enough, and only serve to slow the technique down.

Master Wan Kei Ho teaching students a Northern Shaolin form in Hong Kong.

Northern Shaolin (Bak Siu-lam in Cantonese) is a long-arm style from northern China, passed down by Grandmaster Ku Yu-cheung in the early 1900’s. It is famous for it’s powerful kicking techniques, agile footwork, quick advances and retreats, sudden changes of direction, and the use of internal soft power.

Grandmaster Ku was renown for his Golden Bell qigong (internal body protection) and Iron Palm techniques, which are considered the pinnacle of the Northern Shaolin system, but can rarely be found today.

There are many foundational elements required for a traditional martial art to be effective as a form of self-defense: stance stability, energy development, and internal and external body conditioning, to name a few. But learning techniques, forms and principles, without training the application of the techniques, loses the essence of the art.

Learning how to apply techniques takes place in phases, which starts with static two-man applications without contact, as shown by Master Wan Kei Ho below. Beyond the initial static phase, techniques should be trained with linear and circular footwork, with every increasing speed, energy, and contact (hence the need for body conditioning). Eventually moving from pre-arranged drills to live application training.

Training fighting applications builds more than just a self-defense capability, it also sharpens the mind, focuses internal energy and builds confidence. Which in turn allows practitioners to fear less and relax more, opening energy channels further, which improves internal health.

One of Master Wan Kei Ho’s senior students, Roy Bennett, demonstrating a southern Chinese Fut-gar style form, Kau-da Kune. The Fut-gar style, as passed down from Grandmaster Lau Kam Tung, draws its energy from a modified version of the Shaolin five animals system, that includes the Tiger, Leopard, Snake, Crane and Monkey. The Monkey replaces the more common Dragon element, to add agile footwork to the style.

Master Wan Kei Ho teaching three of the fundamental swinging punch techniques of the Choy Li Fut style: Pau-choi (swinging uppercut punch), Gwa-choi (swinging back fist), and Sau-choi (sweeping knuckle strike). Energy development starts at the waist (dantien) and travels through the body like a whip, to exit through the fist, significantly increasing striking power.

Sifu Wan Kei Ho’s students training Yin-Yang Chap-choi hands (combined positive-negative leopard fist strike), a core technique of the Choy Li Fut style.

Two-man drills are an essential part of any traditional martial art system. They enable students to train footwork, distance, attack and defense techniques, soft ‘ging’ energy, and body conditioning. The Bak-sing lineage of Choy Li Fut is fairly light on forms, but instead emphasizes fighting drills and two-man applications.
