Prof. XU Chenjie Awarded Inaugural Overseas Research Fellowship Scheme

Prof. XU Chenjie has been selected for the inaugural RGC Overseas Research Fellowship Scheme (ORFS). Prof. Xu specialises in nanomedicine, developing next-generation microneedle devices for transdermal drug delivery and biosensing, and intelligent formulations/devices for delivering biologics such as cells.

Launched by the RGC on a pilot basis to promote the internationalisation of UGC-funded universities, the ORFS supports faculty to undertake immersive overseas research collaborations and research-related professional development.

Under the fellowship, Prof. Xu will visit the University of Oxford and University College Dublin to conduct research in medical devices and life sciences, seek additional funding opportunities, and draw on the innovation ecosystems in Oxford and Ireland to strengthen CityUHK’s research capabilities.

Prof. ZHANG Yong and his team develop antibacterial woundplast based on reduced MXene

Prof. ZHANG Yong’s team has developed a new method to enhance the free electron concentration and electrical conductivity of MXene by modifying their surface terminal groups, significantly improving the photothermal conversion efficiency to 91.66% under 808nm laser irradiation. A photothermal woundplast with ultra-low MXene content is developed based on the reduced MXene, exhibiting a high bacterial kill rate. As a proof of concept for chronic wound treatment, the light-triggered woundplast can effectively kill 91.39% of Staphylococcus aureus. Reduced MXene has a strong affinity for reactive oxygen species (ROS) and efficient electron transfer for ROS scavenging, mimicking the function of natural antioxidant enzymes, and holds promise for addressing key challenges in anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and tissue repair applications. This work not only shows an effective method for tuning the photothermal properties of MXene but also demonstrates its translational application potential.
