The Centre for China Studies (CCS) is an interdisciplinary department within the CUHK Faculty of Arts, dedicated to promoting research and teaching in modern and contemporary China in a global context. Message from the Director:

The Centre for China Studies – formerly the Centre for East Asian Studies – is committed to teaching and research in Chinese Studies. Our degree programmes – all conducte

d in English – aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to pursue successful international careers involving China. From our undergraduate BA/BSSc in Contemporary China Studies programme to our graduate MA, MPhil, and PhD programmes in Chinese Studies, we are committed to hands-on teaching and learning about China. The Chinese University Library and the University Services Centre hold an extensive collection of ancient and modern Chinese scholarship, and count among the best libraries in the world for China Studies. In addition, the Chinese art collection maintained by the Institute of Chinese Studies provides students with up-close contact with historical artifacts and artwork, using the China of yesterday to illuminate the China of today. Hong Kong is a vibrant world city where global cultures meet, mix, and mesh. In Hong Kong, traditional Chinese culture comes alive in a contemporary Chinese metropolis. In addition, Hong Kong is the gateway to greater China: Shenzhen – one of the Chinese Mainland’s first cities to welcome world investment – is a short 20-minute train ride from our campus. CCS takes great pleasure in announcing the appointment of Prof. Yu SHI as Assistant Professor, effective from the 2026-27 academic year. Representing CCS, Prof. Tim SUMMERS, Associate Professor and Acting Director, welcomed Prof. SHI to the Centre as she officially reported for duty on August 1, 2026.

Prof. SHI is a historian specializing in the social and cultural history of late imperial and modern China, with particular interests in the historical intersections of technology, media, and the arts. ✨ 𝐂𝐂𝐒 𝐄𝐧𝐝-𝐨𝐟-𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐆𝐞𝐭-𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 ✨

CCS brought together faculty members, administrative staff, and postgraduate students for a warm end-of-year gathering on July 31, 2026, marking the conclusion of the 2025-26 academic year.

A highlight of the gathering was the celebration of the retirement of 𝐌𝐬. 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚 𝐘𝐔, CCS's long-serving workman. Colleagues and students expressed their heartfelt gratitude for her decades of dedicated service and invaluable contributions to the Centre. We wish her a healthy and fulfilling next chapter. 🍰🎁💐

The event was also a wonderful opportunity to welcome new faces to our community, including 𝐌𝐬. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐥 𝐓𝐒𝐄, who joins us as Rebeca's successor, and 𝐌𝐬. 𝐉𝐢𝐞 𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐍𝐆, our new Teaching Assistant. We are delighted to have them on board and wish them every success in their roles. 🎊

We would like to thank Mr. Richard Lee, 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐔𝐇𝐊 𝐉𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠, CCS’ neighbour on the same floor, for joining our gathering and celebrating Rebeca’s retirement.

𝐁𝐀 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐩: 𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐒𝟑𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐚

Our students just wrapped up the CHES3400 summer programme, diving deep into social innovation, policy, and regional development across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. It was a fruitful week of a mix of academic seminars, field studies, and institutional visits:

📚 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 & 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: We kicked off with policy seminars at CUHK before heading to Sai Kung for an immersive, guided cultural tour of Yim Tin Tsai to explore local heritage and community revitalisation.

🏢 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐁𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬: Next, we visited the HK Legislative Council and travelled to CUHK-Shenzhen for expert guest lectures by Prof. Geng Xiao and Prof. Ping Huang on institutional innovation and the strategic role of the Greater Bay Area.

🤖 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞 & 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡: Students gained firsthand insights into local healthcare at Yan Chai Hospital’s social services facilities, followed by an exciting afternoon corporate visit to the Huawei Flagship Store in Shenzhen.

🎨 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 & 𝐔𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: Back in Hong Kong, we explored the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) and hosted guest lectures by Ar. Anna Kwong, Mr. James Chow, and Mr. Esmond Lee covering everything from the design of Yim Tin Tsai to urban landscape architecture, and Hong Kong’s financial role in the global market.

To conclude the week, our students took the stage for their final group presentations, transforming a week of experiential learning into innovative social enterprise proposals. A massive thank you to all the brilliant guest speakers, host institutions, and students for their meaningful participation and contributions throughout the program! 🤝✨

To gain deeper insights into Hong Kong’s role as an international financial centre and its strategic positioning within the Greater Bay Area, our students visited the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) on June 17 during the “Social Enterprise in the Greater Bay Area” course taught by Prof. Li Chen.

Through engaging discussions with industry experts at FSDC, students were able to explore diverse career pathways and better understand the professional landscape of Hong Kong's financial industry, particularly how it is evolving in response to the GBA’s cross‑boundary integration, digital transformation, and the growing demand for sustainable finance.

Our students also had the exciting opportunity to attend a lecture by Mr. Esmond Lee. Mr. Lee shared his deep experiences in playing a key role in Hong Kong’s financial infrastructure development and operations, further enriching our students’ understanding of Hong Kong’s financial sector in both local and cross-boundary contexts within the GBA.

As part of the “Social Enterprise in the Greater Bay Area” course led by Professor Li Chen, our BA students explored different facets of the Greater Bay Area’s development through a cross‑boundary learning experience in mid-June.

On the morning of June 15, students had a rare opportunity to engage in conversation with Ms. Judy Chan, Member of the Legislative Council, during their visit to the LegCo. This was followed by a guided tour of the council chamber and other facilities, where students learned about the history, functions, and evolution of Hong Kong’s legislative body.

In the afternoon, students headed to our sister campus in Shenzhen. At the School of Public Policy of CUHK (SZ), two distinguished speakers, Prof. Xiao Geng, Professor of Practice and Associate Dean (International Cooperation), and Prof. Huang Ping, Associate Professor and Assistant Dean (Students Affairs), gave compelling lectures on the GBA’s “dual headquarter” strategy and innovation landscape. This cross-boundary learning experience highlights CUHK’s “One Brand, Two Campuses” vision and encourages our students to further explore cross-boundary higher education development within the GBA.

On the morning of June 16, students visited Yan Chai Hospital in Tsuen Wan, where they toured its social services facilities and a care and attention home. They also gained deeper insights into the hospital’s long-standing commitment to serving the Hong Kong public through a talk delivered by Mr. Jason Leung.

Students then headed to Shenzhen again for a visit to Huawei, where they explored the company’s flagship store and exhibition hall, followed by a sharing session and discussion.

As part of the “Social Enterprise in the Greater Bay Area” course led by Professor Li Chen, our BA students embarked on an immersive field trip to Yim Tin Tsai in Sai Kung, a historic site that has received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award.

On June 13, Students took a boat to the island for a guided tour of this unique heritage site, which has undergone revitalization in recent years. Once a thriving salt-producing village that sustained over 1,200 people through farming, fishing and salt-making, Yim Tin Tsai offers a compelling case study in Hong Kong’s cultural heritage preservation and community-based social enterprise.

Beyond the field trip, our students also gained first‑hand insights from two distinguished speakers, Ar. Anna Kwong Sum‑yee and Mr. James Chow. Ar. Kwong shared her profound expertise and experiences on cultural preservation and conservation architecture in Yin Tin Tsai through a lecture titled “I Add Nothing and I Take Away Nothing”, whereas Mr. Chow utilized his decades of industry experience to analyze the development of Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis, enriching the students’ understanding of how heritage, urban planning, and social innovation evolve in Hong Kong.

The Greater Bay Area Policy Innovation Forum 2026, with the theme of “𝘖𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘏𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘒𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘰 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘉𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘦𝘢 (𝘎𝘉𝘈) 𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 ‘𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴’ 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭,” was successfully held on 12 June 2026. The Forum was organised by the Centre for China Studies (CCS), Faculty of Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The Forum began with a welcoming address by Prof. Carole Hang-fung Hoyan, CCS Director and Professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, who outlined the background, objectives, and significance of the event. Following the speech, Prof. Chen Li, CCS Associate Director and Associate Professor, presented the research findings of his research project (Project Number: E2025.A4.117), funded by the Public Policy Research Funding Scheme of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Project in Progress). His presentation, titled “𝘖𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘶𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘏𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘒𝘰𝘯𝘨-𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘰 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘉𝘢𝘺 𝘈𝘳𝘦𝘢 𝘪𝘯 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 ‘𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴’ 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘘𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴,” laid a solid analytical foundation for subsequent discussions.

Building on Prof. Li’s presentation, the first panel featured Prof. Yu Huang (Chair Professor, Associate Vice President (Global Engagement), Dean of the Graduate School, Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University), Prof. Yong Zhen (Associate Vice President (Undergraduate Recruitment & Admission) and Professor of Practice Thrust of Financial Technology, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)), and Dr. Heng Chen (Assistant to the President, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen)). Drawing on their institutional experiences, the speakers examined the strategic positioning and prospects of the “One University, Two Campuses” model within the GBA.

The second panel brought together Dr. Min Gao (Dean, Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute), Prof. Geng Xiao (Professor of Practice in Economics & Associate Dean, School of Public Policy, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen)), and Dr. Zhou Fang (Research Director, One Country Two Systems Research Institute). The discussion focused on cross-boundary industry–academia–research partnerships and talent cultivation.

𝐁𝐀 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐧

Our BA students in CHES3403 recently went on a field trip to the Chaoshan region, led by Lecturer Dr. Sun Lin. Through a series of cultural activities and site visits, students explored the region's rich heritage beyond the classroom.

Experiencing the Chaoshan Opera, the Yingge Dance, and the Kung Fu Tea Workshop, Students interacted with the local culture through various senses, including sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. These sensory-rich experiences offered valuable insights into the traditions and everyday life of the Chaoshan community.

Learning extends far beyond textbooks, and this field trip provided students with a deeper understanding of one of South China's most distinctive cultural regions.

中國研究中心本科學生們近日前往潮汕地區進行文化考察，在孫琳博士的帶領下，透過一系列文化體驗與實地參訪，深入認識潮汕豐富而獨特的文化傳統。

從欣賞潮劇、體驗充滿活力的英歌舞，到參與工夫茶工作坊，同學們透過視覺、聽覺、味覺與觸覺，全方位感受潮汕文化的魅力。這些沉浸式的學習經驗，不僅加深了大家對地方文化、社會與生活方式的理解，也啟發同學在實地觀察中將課堂所學與真實社會相聯繫。
