Werner Herzog - one of the greatest filmmakers alive. Don't forget his advice to young creators: READ READ READ READ READ

Werner Herzog has evidently been trying to make 'Bucking Fastard' for most of his career, and it’s not hard to see why. In its tale of two sisters bonded so closely that they do everything in eerie, exact unison, and the rejection they subsequently face in the world, we can see a variation on the twisted innocents and holy fools that populate so much of the director’s work.

Premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival, the film is one of the director’s more ambitious offerings of recent years, a return to fiction narratives and an opportunity to unite sisters Rooney and Kate Mara onscreen for the first time.

PROFESSOR ACKBAR ABBAS 1942-2026

Professor Ackbar Abbas (b. 1942, Hong Kong) died peacefully in Beijing on July 13, 2026 after a brief period of illness. He taught at HKU from 1967-2006 and contributed greatly to the establishment of the Department of Comparative Literature in 1989. During his tenure at HKU, he co-founded the Center for the Study of Globalization and Cultures and served as Department Chair. Professor Abbas is best known for his 1997 book “Hong Kong: Culture and the Politics of Disappearance,” a landmark work that brings together film studies, postcolonial theory, and urbanism to transform understandings of Hong Kong and make the city a crucial site for rethinking postcoloniality, globalization, and urban modernity. Professor Abbas is survived by his dear wife Sola, his four children and three grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving husband, proud (grand)father, devoted colleague, and an inspiration to countless students and readers of his work over many distinguished years at HKU and UC Irvine. A champion of "poor theory", connoisseur of the fake, master of the paradoxical turn — one of a kind. He will be deeply missed.

Hong Kong History Day Speaker Introduction (1)

Prof. John Carroll is Principal Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Hong Kong, where he directs the world’s first MA programme in Hong Kong history. He is the author of several books on Hong Kong history, including A Concise History of Hong Kong.

"Travel with Hong Kong Characteristics: Tourism and Hong Kong History"

Tourism is about far more than economics and travel. It reflects and influences culture, identity, and politics, often revealing and shaping how a place interacts with the rest of the world. And it has played an important role in Hong Kong history. But what’s so “Hong Kong” about the history of Hong Kong tourism? This talk discusses several distinguishing features, including the relationship with mainland China, the reliance on regional and global developments, and, especially, both official and public doubt about the value of tourism. It also considers how efforts to promote tourism sometimes have had unpredictable and even unsettling results.
