Multiculturalism in Action (MIA) is a knowledge-transfer project started in 2013 by Prof. Siumi Maria Tam, Department of Anthropology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. It aims at involving young people of mainstream and minority origins to gain an indepth understanding of Hong Kong's diverse cultures and further to work together to make a change. Starting with a focus on South Asian communitie
s in Hong Kong, workshops on Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan cultures were held. Since then numerous intercultural education activities were presented to the public, including carnivals in public housing estates, academic seminars for universities, handicraft and sports workshops for secondary schools, and training programs for business corporations. Participants numbered over 30,000. During Covid19 pandemic, we designed a semester-long online multicultural handicraft program on cultures including Italian, Japanese, and Turkish, ending with a virtual party complete with Central Asian music performance. Participants came from 6 continents, ranging between age 2 and 80. An online art exhibition of the works of teachers and students was the grand finale. A radio program on RTHK CIBS followed, with 13 episodes each having a member of an ethnic community in Hong Kong presenting their views of their own culture. MIA Project pioneers a systematic understanding of our diverse local heritages, and promotes cross-cultural awareness and appreciation among different ethnic groups and social sectors in Hong Kong society. We believe that partnership and peer learning, as well as sustained mutual empowerment will help to eradicate racial discrimination and bring about positive ethnic relations in Hong Kong.
