📰 Media Coverage | Advancing Dementia Care & Brain Health: Prof. Agnes Chan Featured in South China Morning Post

How can we buy more "golden hours" for Alzheimer's patients and their families? ⏳🧠

With official estimates projecting Hong Kong's dementia cases to reach 330,000 by 2039, early detection and evidence-based interventions are becoming critical pillars of public health.

In a recent in-depth feature by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Prof. Agnes Chan (Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, CUHK) shared key insights on how non-invasive screening technologies—such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)—and innovative lifestyle interventions can transform the local dementia care landscape.

This work exemplifies the Department's commitment to translating neuroscience research into real-world impact.

【Research Seminar】
We are absolutely thrilled to invite you to our upcoming hybrid research seminar, featuring Prof. Michel Thiebaut de Schotten from the University of Bordeaux (France) Université de Bordeaux, one of the world's leading authorities in neuroimaging and brain connectivity (with a remarkable h-index of 70).

Title: Neuroimaging connections and mitochondria in the living human brain
Date: 28 July 2026 (Tuesday)
Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 nn
Venue: Room 619, Sino Building, Chung Chi College, CUHK
Zoom Link: https://cuhk.zoom.us/j/95899217762
Meeting ID: 958 9921 7762

[Abstract]
While advances in have revealed that cognition emerges from distributed networks of brain connections, understanding the brain's recovery requires looking beyond structure alone. Prof. Thiebaut de Schotten will present a network-based framework to demonstrate how white matter disruption shapes cognitive deficits, introducing computational tools like and . He will also introduce the —the first whole-brain map of mitochondrial respiratory capacity—and share unpublished findings on how inherited dysfunction selectively reshapes the brain's energetic landscape.

[About the Speaker]
Prof. Michel Thiebaut de Schotten is a leading neuroscientist who has published nearly 200 papers in top-tier international journals and delivered over 200 lectures worldwide. His career is driven by a single question: Why do some brains recover after injury and others do not? His work spans from the operating room—where he first saw how disrupting a single white matter tract alters awareness—to developing computational tools that predict cognitive deficits. Committed to Open Science, all his groundbreaking tools (including , Functionnectome, and MitoBrainMap) are freely available to serve the global scientific community.

We look forward to your dynamic participation! 🤍

Bridging Empiricism and Empathy: A Masterclass in Modern Psychological Science with Prof. Suzanne So 🤍

“Psychology is a science — but its core is always about people.”

In an era of rapid AI advancement and fast-moving societal trends, how do top researchers anchor their work? In our latest CUHK Psychology Faculty Spotlight, we sat down with Prof. Suzanne So, who shares her journey from reading Experimental Psychology at Oxford to pioneering clinical insights in Hong Kong.

Trained under Oxford’s rigorous empirical traditions, Prof. So has consistently pushed the boundaries of cognitive brain science. Using advanced EEG and real-time dynamic tracking, her lab has decoded the complex neural mechanisms behind auditory verbal hallucinations — transforming rigorous data into a powerful tool for patient understanding and relief.

For Prof. So, academic excellence is never confined to the laboratory. By feeding cutting-edge research back into clinical practice, she empowers young individuals experiencing early psychosis to realise: “This is about your brain. This is not your fault.”

Transitioning from clinician to mentor at CUHK, Prof. So now dedicates herself to training the next generation of world-class therapists and researchers — amplifying the reach and impact of psychological care.
