【CUHK Alumnus Newton Ng: Driving Smart Mobility Toward Autonomous Driving】
Ever thought that the era of autonomous driving might arrive sooner than we expect😳?

The government’s recent Transport Strategy Blueprint has spotlighted on smart mobility. But, what does that really mean💁🏻? Newton Ng, a CUHK alumnus and Business Development Director of KC Smart Mobility🚍, explained that smart mobility has already quietly integrated into our lives over the past decade — from real-time bus arrivals to driver assistance systems. Today, over 60 autonomous vehicles are operating across various pilot sites in Hong Kong🚗.

For the bus industry, autonomous driving could ease driver shortages and an aging workforce. Newton noted that Mainland China’s autonomous technology is racing ahead, with some cities already achieving a 1-to-10 remote monitoring ratio 🖥️ per safety operator. While Hong Kong still adopts a 1-to-1 model, its right-hand drive standards and distinct traffic rules makes it appealing launchpad and global gateway for mainland smart mobility enterprises.

However, achieving fully unmanned operations isn’t just a tech leap, it also requires progress in mindset and policy. Newton emphasized the real key lies in integrating technology with operations🔑. Stronger collaboration between academia and industry is essential to translate research into real-world applications 💪. The pace of autonomous mobility depends not on how fast technology advances, but on how ready our systems, policies, and mindset are to keep up.

【EPIN Summer Study Tour 2026 – Day 4 in Cambridge 🇬🇧】

As we head into the final two days of the Cambridge study tour, Day 4 was a perfect combination of wisdom and beauty.

We were excited to start the day with Mr. Brian Corbett’s session on Entrepreneurship in Practice. His practical guidance on developing project pitches and entrepreneurial solutions in biotechnology and healthcare helped students sharpen their ideas for tomorrow’s pitching session.

Next, Dr. Aga Iwasiewicz-Wabnig introduced us to the Maxwell Centre, where industrial engagement with physical scientists and engineers is fostered. We gained valuable insight into how science and technology build a healthy and resilient society for the future. It was fascinating to learn about the economic impact Cambridge can generate for every £1 invested.

Later, we were both surprised and inspired by Dr. Jim Ajioka, CEO of 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐱 for the world’s first fossil-free biological dyeing process.

And finally, the long-awaited highlight of the day — the Gala Dinner! It was an unforgettable evening hosted by Jesus College in their stunning historic hall, where we shared love, joy, and meaningful reflections as we brought this amazing day to a close.

🛎️ Stay tuned for our last day in Cambridge tomorrow!

【AI in Speech Therapy: Rebuilding Communication and Restoring Voices】

Did you know that AI could help patients find their voices again? Professor Wu Xixin, Assistant Professor of Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, CUHK, utilizes AI technology to assist dysarthric patients with their rehabilitation, helping them rebuild their daily communication skills ✨.

Dysarthric patients struggle to speak clearly due to damaged vocal muscles or nerves, making everyday interactions difficult. Hence, Professor Wu leverages AI to analyze patients’ pronunciation patterns, converting blurred speech into clear audio for smoother everyday conversations🗣️.

Furthermore, patients often face difficulty in making regular follow-up appointments due to the shortage of speech therapists, causing delays in their recovery. To bridge this gap, their product also supports home rehabilitation training. By providing instant feedback and tracking progress, therapists can optimize recovery plans with the data collected.

Through the collaboration of technology and expertise, dysarthric patient can receive more effective and suitable rehabilitation. Looking ahead, the product is expected to be expand to mainland China and other Chinese-speaking regions, benefiting even more patients in need.

【From a university assignment to a $10M Brand? 】

What if your next big business is already sitting in your class notes? At just 22, Canadian entrepreneur Vansh Sobti turned a simple university assignment—combining two products into one — into a million-dollar startup.

While Vansh was struggling with post-lockdown social anxiety😣, stress-relief tools helped him at home, but he felt uncomfortable using them in public. That’s when inspiration struck — what if he built stress-relief features directly into a hoodie?😃✨ A subtle, wearable way to stay calm anywhere.

Soon, he realized many others were facing the same anxiety😯. So in 2023, he turned his idea into reality and launched Cloud Nine Clothing. Today, the brand has grown into a $10 million (USD) annual revenue business 👏🏻🔥.

But this wasn’t just luck. As a teenager, Vansh ran a drop-shipping business where he learned a key entrepreneurial truth: great products start with understanding people 👍🏻. If a product truly solves a real pain point, demand follows. Otherwise, you have to convince consumers the problem even exists.

By deeply understanding customer needs, Vansh built a brand that truly resonates. Even when people doubted him for being “too young” or “inexperienced”, he stayed the course, proving that resilience and perseverance 💪🏻 matter far more than age or experience.

💡Your million-dollar idea might not be in the future, but already be in your notes.
