Advice for Parents 08 - Doing the laundry

Make household chores into a fun opportunity to practise English with your child! Here are our top tips for doing the laundry.

1. Household chores can be a fun opportunity to practise English with your child.

2. When you are doing the laundry, talk to your child about the colours and fabrics (cotton, wool, etc.) of the clothes.

3. Later when you are sorting the clean washing you can practise language for clothes and possessives ('This is Mum's top.' or 'These are Jenny's socks.').

4. You can download and print a set of clothes flashcards. Play games with the flashcards to practise clothes vocabulary.

5. Talk to your child about their favourite clothes.

Advice for Parents 07 - Mystery bag game

Play a fun mystery bag game to practise English vocabulary with your children. Here are our top tips for playing a mystery bag game.

1. This fun game uses the sense of touch.

2. Find some objects which your child knows the name of in English.

3. They should each feel different (e.g. a potato, a pencil, a teaspoon, a feather).

4. Put the objects into a bag.

5.The child puts their hand in the bag and tries to identify the objects by feeling them.

6. Encourage them to say how the object feels (soft, rough, etc.) as well as naming it.

Advice for Parents 05 - Drawing pictures

Drawing pictures can be a creative way for children to practise English. Here are our top tips for drawing pictures.

1. Encourage your child to draw a picture and talk about the picture in English.

2. You can ask questions like 'Who is it?', 'What colour is it?', 'How many children are there?'

3. You can then ask them to write or copy a sentence under the picture to describe it, for example 'I'm at the park.'

4. The sentence should be appropriate to your child's level of English.

5. Help your child with language as necessary and of course give them lots of praise for their efforts!
