I’m going to say something that feels uncomfortable for a lot of parents.
Children feel safer when you say no.
We often think saying no will damage confidence.
That it will make them feel restricted.
But the opposite is usually true.
Children relax when boundaries are clear.
When the limits are predictable, their nervous system doesn’t have to scan for uncertainty.
They know where the edges are.
And when children feel safe, they focus better.
They listen better.
They learn better.
This is especially important with reading.
Learning to read requires frustration tolerance.
If a child has never experienced calm, consistent limits, small challenges feel overwhelming.
Structure at home builds resilience in learning.
Saying no is not harsh.
It’s stabilising.
