As climate change and global warming intensify wildfire activity, the Wildlandโ€“Urban Interface (WUI) is becoming an increasingly critical landscape for understanding wildfire risk. The WUI is where human settlements and combustible vegetation converge, creating conditions where ignitions can rapidly develop into damaging wildfires. Yet existing WUI classifications largely rely on a simple distinction between interface and intermix conditions, describing the spatial arrangement of buildings and vegetation without fully accounting for how fire may transmit through different configurations.
This research proposes a process-based WUI typology that links ignition potential, fuel configuration, and fire transmission. It first considers the likelihood of human-caused ignition where people and flammable vegetation converge. Following ignition, horizontal fuel connectivity shapes potential pathways of surface fire spread, while vertical fuel coupling, particularly ladder fuels, can facilitate fire escalation into the canopy. By linking these processes, the framework moves beyond the conventional interfaceโ€“intermix classification to distinguish WUI configurations according to their potential fire-transmission mechanisms and wildfire development.
Using California as a case study, the research develops a spatial methodology to map and characterize these WUI types. The resulting typology provides a more nuanced understanding of how wildfire may develop differently across WUI configurations, and offers a framework that can support wildfire risk assessment, urban planning, and landscape design by identifying critical relationships between population, built form, and vegetation fuels.

The Innovation is a comprehensive English-language academic journal co-founded in 2020 by young scientists and Cell Press. It aims to present inspiring interdisciplinary discoveries to the scientific community and encourage researchers to focus on the essence of science and the original aspiration of free exploration. Its authors come from 84 countries worldwide; the journal has been cited by authors from 175 countries; and for each issue, 1/5 to 1/3 of the corresponding authors are from overseas. The editorial board currently consists of 200 members from 22 countries, with 50% of the board members from outside China (including 39 academicians from various countries), covering all fields of natural sciences. The Innovation has been indexed in databases such as DOAJ, ADS, Scopus, PubMed, ESCI, INSPEC, EI, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Journal Ranking (Q1, TOP), and OARL. In 2025. its Cite Score is 32.6. and its Impact Factor is 39.5 (5-Year Impact Factor: 46). From June 25 to 28, 2023, four sister journals-The Innovation Life, The Innovation Geoscience, The Innovation Materials, and The Innovation Medicine-were jointly launched; on February 26, 2024 the fifth sister journal, The Innovation Energy, published its inaugural issue. These five sister journals have been indexed in databases such as Google Scholar, CAS, Scopus, DOAJ, and OARL. On November 10, 2025, the sixth sister journal, The Innovation Informatics, published its inaugural issue. In April 2026, three sister journals-The Innovation Drug Discovery, The Innovation Oncology, and The Innovation Nutrition-were launched. On November 10, 2025, The Innovation Informatics was launched. Notably, three sister journals, The Innovation Drug Discovery, The Innovation Oncology, and The Innovation Nutrition have been officially launched on April 16, 27, 28 in 2026. And The Innovation Neurology, The Innovation Water, The Innovation Physics, The Innovation Insights, The Innovation Reviews will launch in 2026. Adhering to the philosophy of โ€œpublish great papers and promote it widely,โ€ The Innovation promotes authors articles across various platforms both domestically and internationally. We look forward to The Innovation journal family providing scientists with a better article publishing experience.
