[Kennedy Town Praya] Recently, authorities proposed classifying the Kennedy Town Praya seawall as a Grade II historic building. In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Professor Kwong Chi-man of the Spatial History Project at Hong Kong Baptist University’s Department of History noted that the structure is likely one of the very few surviving century-old seawalls on Hong Kong Island. By comparing historical maps and aerial photographs, the seawall's outline can be traced as far back as the 1889 street map of the City of Victoria, and it remains visible in aerial photos from 1924, 1945, and 1963. Prior to the war, the major industries located behind the Kennedy Town waterfront included a Hong Kong rope factory, cattle depots, and ironworks. From the 1960s and 1970s onwards, these industries gradually relocated.
