【🎊The 10th International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (2024) International Summit and Awards Ceremony was successfully held!🎊 】
The 10th International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (2024) International Summit cm Award Ceremony was held on 3-9 Aug at The Education University of Hong Kong. The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge is a new international mathematical modeling contest for middle school students worldwide, dedicated to popularizing mathematical modeling education to enhance middle school students’ core mathematical literacy and scientific and technological innovation capabilities.
Professor Sun D**g, JP, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, attended the event and delivered a speech, saying that the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge is not only a contest but also proves the importance of mathematical modeling and its applications. Mathematics is the foundation of science and technology. He pointed out that to promote the development of Hong Kong as an international talent hub, the government actively promotes STEM education both inside and outside the classroom to more quickly stimulate the scientific inquiry interest and spirit of students at different learning stages. He continued that Hong Kong has attracted more than 100 representative technology companies to establish or expand this business in Hong Kong, including many leading artificial intelligence companies from the mainland and overseas. For students interested in mathematical modeling and artificial intelligence, Hong Kong is one of the best destinations for career development.
💡 Cultivate students’ independent thinking ability
Professor LEUNG, Frederick K. S., BBS, chairman of the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge Committee(Zhonghua), President of The International Commission on Mathematics Instruction, said that the Mathematical Modeling Challenge enables students to master the means of applying mathematical knowledge to solve real-life problems. More importantly, it cultivates students' critical minds and independent thinking abilities. Especially in a world filled with misinformation. He congratulated all the winning students. At the same time, he also sent a message that winning a prize is not the end, and hoped that students would be good at using the critical and independent thinking developed during the contest in their future lives.
Dr. Solomon Garfunkel, Chairman of the International Organizing Committee of the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge, delivered a speech and congratulated the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge on its increasing institutionalization and internationalization. He continued that the challenge showed real problems to students, and he hoped that students would use the power of a team to solve problems and learn to apply mathematics to solve practical problems in the future.
Professor LEE, Chi Kin John, JP, President of The Education University of Hong Kong, said in his speech that Hong Kong focuses on promoting STEM and STEAM education. The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge adopts the "twin-city model" in which Hong Kong and Boston in the United States hold events alternately, which not only highlights Hong Kong's development space as an international education hub. , and also established the regional positioning of The Education University of Hong Kong in promoting STEM education.
More than 36 countries and regions participated in this International Mathematical Modeling Challenge. After multiple reviews in Greater China Regional Contests and International Round, the teams from Pui Kiu College in Hong Kong and Shenzhen Middle School stood out and won the Outstanding Award in the IMMC International Round. After the award ceremony, teachers and students continued to participate in the international summit and summer workshop activities. The activities included visits to the Science Park and Cyberport; visits to InnoHK’s Hong Kong Quantum AI Laboratory, inspections of digital technology and Web 3.0 companies, etc. International summits and summer workshops. The workshop activities started on August 3, lasted for one week, and ended on August 9.
