We are thrilled to have Prof. John Spengler from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health join the Department of Data Science as a Distinguished Visiting Professor! 👏🎓

A global leader in environmental health and exposure science with over 40 years of groundbreaking work, Prof. Spengler has shaped how we understand the health impacts of indoor and outdoor environments—from homes and schools to transit systems.

🏡🌳 His recent research includes the use of Virtual Reality to explore the health benefits of nature exposure, and his commitment to sustainability and climate change solutions continues to inspire.

The Department of Data Science is pleased to announce the latest instalment in the Distinguished Seminar Series, featuring Prof. John (Jack) Spengler, Akira Yamaguchi Professor of Environmental Health and Human Habitation at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The seminar, titled "A Curious Career with Contaminants", will take place on 8 December 2025.

Prof. Spengler will share highlights from his multi-decade research career at Harvard, which spans a wide range of environmental health topics. From studying the health effects of PM2.5 to exploring the health benefits of Nature during the COVID-19 pandemic, and investigating indoor environments, Prof. Spengler’s work has shed light on the complex impacts of contaminants on human health.

This seminar is jointly hosted by the School of Data Science and the Hong Kong Institute for Data Science. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the latest developments in environmental health and its implications for public health and well-being.

Congratulations to our Data Science PhD student Mr. Xinuo ZHAO, supervised by Professor Zijun ZHANG, who have won a Gold Medal at the 5th Asia Exhibition of Innovations & Inventions Hong Kong (AEII HK 2025) – a prestigious regional event dedicated to showcasing cutting-edge innovations and inventions.

This year, CityUHK secured a total of 17 awards, including 1 Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury, 6 Gold Medals, 7 Silver Medals, and 3 Bronze Medals across 17 innovative projects. Xinuo ZHAO's dedication and innovative work played a key role in this achievement, showcasing the excellence of our department's students on an international stage.

This success highlights the exceptional research guidance provided by Prof. Zijun ZHANG and the creativity and dedication of our department's students on an international platform.

The AEII HK provides a valuable platform for inventors and researchers to present their groundbreaking work. CityUHK's strong performance demonstrates our university's excellence in fostering high-impact innovation and research.

CityUHK Data Science students clinched the Grand Prize at the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Public Policy Data Governance Analysis Competition"! Their project used GIS technology to identify green space gaps for Hong Kong’s elderly, contributing to better urban planning. 💡🌳
