Global Awareness Week 2018
Building on the success of last year's ‘Global Awareness Week’, the Global Exposure Committee brought the programme back again for students to gain exposure and develop a sense of global citizenship. Held from 5 to 9 February, guests of different nationalities came to share their cultures and experiences with S1-3 students. During this week, students in all forms had the opportunity to participate in the ‘Global Village’ and the ‘Global Week Workshops’ where they played games, sampled different cuisines and languages, and interacted with people from different countries and cultures.

Global Village has come to an end! Today we had booths from 7 countries across 2 continents: Bulgaria, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia! The students enjoyed playing traditional games, tasting delicious food and most importantly, having direct cultural conversations with the foreign guests!

It is pleasant to see how leadership skills are well nurtured through these local students, each student leader delegates job well and team work is strong. We hope to return soon to bring you more insights of different countries!

23-27 July 2017

To promote STEM education and broaden the students’ horizons in science and technology, the Aerial Photography and Technology Team organized a study tour to Singapore, from 23 to 27 July. 20 S2 and S3 students joined the tour and participated in different science activities organised by "Science Festival@Singapore Science Centre". Students visited “Makerfaire”, which was an exhibition of booths displaying products which were invented by local secondary students and technology companies overseas. They also attended a 2-day workshop to assemble a robotic arm using programming language. Students were equipped with electronics and programming skills which allowed them to further explore robotic applications in solving daily life problems.

Cambridge Programmes 2017 08/09/2017

29 July to 12 Aug 2017

The decade-old Cambridge Programmes (CPs) were initiated by the two Directors, Mr Peter Clark and Mrs Rebecca Clark to provide opportunities for primary and secondary school students to be more exposed to a rich English learning environment. The two-week programmes, held at the University of Cambridge, provided different induction courses on science, arts and law. This summer, cultural activities such as visiting Sandringham House (Royal Estate) and the Imperial War Museum at Duxford were also organised to deepen students’ understanding of British culture and history. A total of 16 Ying Wa students joined this year (from 29 July to 12 Aug) and had a very fruitful and enjoyable time with their mentors, who were undergraduate or postgraduate students at the university.

Music Tour to Austria (23/6/2017 – 2/7/2017)
Text and photos by: 3D Lock Yin-tung, Toby (2016-2017)
I am very grateful to the Music Department of YWGS for organising a music tour to Austria this summer. Vienna has been developing for more than 800 years and it is regarded as the ‘City of Music’. We visited Salzburg, the oldest city in Austria. We had six performances in total. One of the performances was in the Mirabell Garden, a place where the famous film —‘the Sound of Music’ was shot. I will never forget this performance in my life time.
Also, we attended some workshops, like choral workshops and folk dance workshops. We learnt a lot of singing techniques and experienced the Austrian traditional culture.
After staying in Austria for nearly ten days, I found that the Austrians always put happy smiles on their faces. They work much more relaxed than Hong Kongers. The Austrian students do not have as much work as students in Hong Kong and they seem living much happier than us.
Not only did I improve my singing techniques and know more about Austria, I also understand how ‘downshifting’ (live slowly) could make people more relaxed. Slow down your footsteps, and you can always find something new like the Austrians. I wish more study tours could be organised to widen our horizons.

Talk on Okinawa, Japan
30 June 2017
In order to develop a sense of global citizenship, the Civic Education Committee and the Global Exposure Committee have been joining hands to promote local, national and international cultures. Among their programmes this year was a talk on 30 June delivered by two guest speakers, Mr Saisho and Ms Josephine Chan, from the Okinawa Prefectural Government Hong Kong Representative Office, who shared with our students and teachers the essence of Okinawa, including the food culture, weather, landscape, local and international transportation network. It was followed by a much anticipated exchange tour to Okinawa from 16 to 20 July.

Shameen (Shamian) Study Tour & Talk by Prof. Ting Sun-pao Joseph

28 June 2017

We are honoured to have Professor Ting Sun-pao Joseph (former Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History, current Honorary Assistant Professor at the HKU School of Chinese and Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at the Chinese University of Hong Kong) talk to us at assembly on 29 March and guide us on the study tour from 28-30 June.

It is also the first time our school organized a study tour with Ying Wa College. A total of 36 students from both schools joined this excursion. Professor Ting peppered his talk on the theme of “Canton (Guangzhou) System and Shameen (Shamian)” with anecdotes about the historical figures and description of China trade in the Ch'ing (Qing) Dynasty. This was followed by a 3D2N tour of Shameen (Shamian) in June. His approach has facilitated student and teacher participants in developing a deeper understanding of the economic development of Canton (Guangzhou) with Southeast Asia and Europe before and after 1842.

Korean Exchange Programme 2017 28/03/2017

This year, the Global Exposure Committee and the Civic Education Committee joined hands together to host Korean students at Ying Wa Girls’ School (YWGS). The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), a partner of YWGS for years, placed 20 Koreans in our hospitality programme. Our brother school, Ying Wa College (YWC), also came onboard.
On 23 January, selected students of both schools underwent an ice-breaking session and some training to better understand the Sham Shui Po district. One month after (i.e. 23 February), both schools welcomed the Korean visitors with a tea party before our guided tour of the neighbourhood.
The Korean youths performed K-pop and traditional dances which attracted more than 200 students to stay after school to enjoy the cultural display at the open playground. 6 YWGS and 2 YWC students participated in the home stay programme, introducing local cuisine to their guests and showing them different tourist spots. The exchange programme was fruitful and memorable.
