About the Workshop
Prof Clark and his team research gambling psychology with a variety of methods both quantitative and qualitative: his insights will be relevant to PhD students across SCM, SS, COM, and beyond.

During the workshop, Prof Clark will first present on his research methods and findings. Then, selected PhD students are invited to give a ‘data blitz’ presentation of between 5–10 minutes about their research methods and findings. Prof Clark and the audience will provide feedback that we hope will be helpful for further developing and finalising your PhD projects.

About the Speaker
Dr. Luke Clark is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Centre for Gambling Research at UBC. The Centre was established in 2014 with funding from the Province of British Columbia government and the British Columbia Lottery Corporation.

His current research focuses on 3 main questions: i) how do the psychological features of specific gambling products (e.g. modern slot machines) relate to gambling harms? ii) how do biological and psychological traits create vulnerability to disordered gambling? iii) how can behavioural data from online gambling be used to identify at-risk individuals?

He is also an Assistant Editor for two of the leading journals in the field, Addiction and International Gambling Studies.

~jukebox is a project that focus on sound art improvisation and sharing by artists.

The event will contain solo, jamming and sharing parts. Furthermore, there will be an introduction of SoundLab: jukebox installation prototype, a physical archive of sounds and performances.

About the Artist:

Brian Chu (龢wo4) is an interdisciplinary artist from Hong Kong, working across sound, writing, installation, and performance. He is a drummer of the band Restless Waters, a member of the experimental music and moving image collective Exit-Entry, and the interdisciplinary art collective Writing As Method. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Global Art Practice at Tokyo University of the Arts. He has performed in Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Chicago, USA. In 2018, he was selected for the soundpocket Artist Support Programme as an emerging artist.
Centred on improvisational practice, his work investigates how relationships are formed among people, communities, and things through listening and the interaction of sound and space. In recent years, his practice has expanded into writing, installation, and workshops, continuing to explore the practice of commoning and the possibilities of coexistence.
His solo releases include MANNAKA (2025), only to be found (2023), and Spiral (2020). Collaborative releases include mui wo (2024), Achilles Jam Anthology 2024.

🌟SCM Faculty Insight: Assistant Professor Leon Xiao Featured in SCMP on Gaming Regulation and Gambling Risk

Drawing on his expertise in consumer and technology law, our very own Assistant Professor Leon Xiao has been featured in the South China Morning Post recently - first in June, on illegal online gambling in Hong Kong, and again in August, on regulating loot boxes in mobile gaming, blind boxes and trading cards.
