Prof. Fan Zhanxi’s project awarded RGC Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2025/26

A project led by Professor Zhanxi FAN, titled “Electrosynthesis of high-value organonitrogen compounds via C-N coupling: from catalyst design to cell engineering”, was awarded funding of HK$ 4.8 million from the Research Grants Council (RGC) under the Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) 2025/26.

Traditional production of these essential chemicals, such as urea (>180 million tons annually) and cyclohexanone oxime (key intermediate for nylon-6), relies on energy-intensive thermochemical routes involving fossil fuel-derived feedstocks under harsh conditions.

Electrosynthesis using renewable electricity offers a transformative pathway to produce high-value organonitrogen compounds from abundant small molecules like carbon dioxide and nitrate, fundamentally changing how we approach chemical manufacturing. This project presents a comprehensive strategy by integrating catalyst design, mechanism study, and cell engineering, aiming to provide crucial technological foundations for sustainable chemical manufacturing.

The ranking evaluates institutions based on the articles shared in top journals in the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields in 2025. CityUHK achieved an Article Share of 81.19 and an Article Count of 256.

CityUHK was also ranked 16th in Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025 and 8th in U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Subject Rankings 2026–2027 in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology globally, marking CityUHK the only university in Hong Kong ranked among the global top 50 across three reputable international rankings.

CHEM Global Research Assistant Professor Prof. Yang Jiarui has been listed on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list in the Healthcare & Science category.

Prof. Yang’s research focuses on the design and construction of efficient electrochemical systems, aiming to deepen understanding of the relationship between structure and activity in electrocatalytic processes. It has been cited over 7,000 times thanks to research papers published in journals including Angewandte Chemie, Nature and Nature Communications and holds two patents in this area.

Project led by Prof. Zhang Hua received Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) Funding

Prof. Zhang’s project “Novel Unconventional Cu-based Catalysts for CO₂ Conversion towards Scalable Production of Value-added Chemicals” secured HK$39.64 million under the TRS.

The project focuses on frontier developments in green technology and clean energy. It integrates AI-guided catalyst design with unique Phase Engineering of Nanomaterials (PEN) technology to synthesise novel catalysts, efficiently converting waste carbon dioxide into high-value chemicals, such as ethylene and ethanol, at a scalable industrial level.

Chemistry students won 5 awards, including a First Prize, a Second Prize, a Third Prize, and two Merit Prizes, in the 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition, organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association.
