由食品科學與營養學系副教授方家熙教授及其團隊研究員Elizaldy Acebu Maboloc博士合作進行的一項研究最近於《科學》期刊發表，標題為「海洋食品生物安全漏洞威脅生物多樣性」。該研究通過香港及其他地區的案例佐證，揭示了經由全球海洋食品貿易傳播的入侵物種如何對生物多樣性構成嚴重威脅。健康海洋對於全球可持續糧食系統至關重要。透過加強生物安全措施保護生物多樣性，能有效保障漁業、水產養殖業以及長遠的食物安全。

A study by Prof. James Kar-Hei Fang, Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, together with Dr Elizaldy Acebu Maboloc, Research Fellow in Prof. Fang’s team, has recently been published in Science titled “Seafood biosecurity gaps threaten biodiversity”. Their research underscores how invasive species transported through the global seafood trade present a serious threat to biodiversity, as evidenced by documented cases in Hong Kong and other regions. Healthy oceans are essential for global sustainable food systems. Protecting biodiversity through stronger biosecurity measures safeguards fisheries, aquaculture, and long term food security.

恭喜化學系副系主任兼副教授勞子桓教授成功入選 2025 年《麻省理工科技評論》「35 歲以下科技創新 35 人」中國區名單「遠見者」組別，以表彰他在催化科學領域的開創性研究成果和卓越貢獻。他更是本年度獲此殊榮的五位香港院校學者之一。

勞教授建構同步共振軟 X 射線衍射（RSXRD）技術，在國際上首次實現工業級分子篩骨架鋁原子及「鋁對」的三維空間精確定位，徹底打破困擾數十年的活性位元點「物理黑箱」。這項突破性成果已於2025年發表在《科學》雜誌上，並已在工業合作中展現巨大的應用價值，對提升碳資源轉化效率及應對全球氣候變化具有重大科學與應用價值。

「35 歲以下科技創新 35 人」是由世界頂尖科技媒體《麻省理工科技評論》發起，旨在每年從多個前沿科技及產業領域遴選出優秀的青年科技創新人才。中國區評選於 2017 年設立，持續在各科技創新領域發掘具有國際影響力的卓越青年科學家。

Congratulations to Prof. Benedict Lo, Associate Head and Associate Professor of Department of Chemistry, for being named on the 2025 “MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 China” (TR35 China) list in the “Visionaries” category in recognition of his pioneering research achievements in catalytic science. He is one of the five spots awarded to Hong Kong university scholars this year.

Prof. Lo developed the synchrotron resonant soft X-ray diffraction (RSXRD) technique, enabling the world’s first three-dimensional atomic-resolution mapping of framework aluminium in industrial-grade zeolite catalysts and resolving the decades-long “black box” surrounding the precise spatial arrangement of active sites. This breakthrough, published in Science in 2025, has strong industrial value and it offers significant scientific and practical benefits for improving carbon-resource conversion efficiency and helping address global climate challenges.

Established by the MIT Technology Review, the annual TR35 global list recognises outstanding young technological innovators across multiple frontier tech and industrial fields. The TR35 China regional selection was established in 2017 to recognise exceptional and internationally influential young scientific and technological leaders in China.

恭喜化學系能源材料講座教授、香港全球傑出創科學人王連洲教授獲得研究資助局2026/27年度「主題研究計劃」資助，開展一項人工智能（AI）跨學科項目，以促進綠色燃料發展。這項由王教授帶領的「智能人工光合作用」研究項目獲得了研究資助局約港幣4,883萬元的資助。

王教授和研究團隊計劃建立一個智能人工光合作用平台，利用太陽能驅動二氧化碳轉化，生產甲醇等可儲存的綠色燃料，及開發可在自然陽光下運作的模組化太陽能燃料面板。通過融合AI、前沿化學與智能工程，他們致力於加速碳中和轉型，保障未來能源供應鏈，並將尖端科研突破轉化為切實可行的商業技術。

Congratulations to Prof. Wang Lianzhou, Chair Professor of Energy Materials of the Department of Chemistry and Hong Kong Global STEM Scholar, who has received funding support from the Research Grants Council (RGC)’s Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) 2026/27 for an interdisciplinary artificial intelligence (AI) project to drive the development of green fuels. The research project on “Intelligent Artificial Photosynthesis” led by Prof. Wang has been awarded RGC funding of approximately HK$48.83 million.

Prof. Wang and the research team aim to build an Intelligent Artificial Photosynthesis platform that converts solar-driven carbon dioxide into storable green fuels like methanol, and to develop modular solar fuel panels capable of operating under natural sunlight. By combining AI, cutting-edge chemistry and smart engineering, their work seeks to accelerate carbon neutrality, secure future energy supply chains and turn scientific breakthroughs into viable commercial technologies.

The 5-day PolyU Summer Institute on July 27–31 concluded smoothly on campus! 🎉

This year, the Faculty of Science welcomed over 80 local and overseas high school students for an immersive university experience:

🔬Students conducted hands-on experiments in PolyU’s state-of-the-art labs and explored cutting-edge technology in the Cleanroom.

🏢A site visit to TÜV Rheinland, a leading testing and certification provider, gave students firsthand insights into commercial laboratory standards and industry prospects.

💬Teachers and students led sharing sessions to help participants explore their academic interests and future career pathways.

The 3MT competition is an academic competition developed by the University of Queensland where doctoral students present their research to public audience in just three minutes and one slide. Congratulations to Prof. Wong Wai-yeung, Raymond, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Clarea Au Professor in Energy and Chair Professor of Chemical Technology, on being elected as the Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society (FCCS)!

The FCCS is established by Chinese Chemical Society in 2019 and elected no more than 50 fellows each year. It aims to inspire members to continue reaching new scientific and technological heights while promoting the development of China’s chemical industry. FCCS is the highest and most elite membership level of the CCS. This award is a testament to attaining systematic and creative achievements to chemistry and related fields and making outstanding contributions to the development and progress of the discipline of chemistry.

PolyU SCIENCE Young Talents Competition 2026 Concludes: Celebrating the Rise of Future Scientists 🌟

The Final Round of the "PolyU SCIENCE Young Talents Competition," organised by the PolyU Faculty of Science, concluded with great success on 21 March, 2026! 🎊

Out of more than 180 preliminary teams, the top 30 elite teams gathered on the PolyU campus for an ultimate showdown of wisdom and creativity. 🔬 Stepping into PolyU’s state-of-the-art research laboratories, participants tackled a series of engaging and inspiring scientific experiments encompassing the disciplines of Biology and Food Science, Chemistry and Physics. Throughout the intense competition, these young talented students gave their all to compete for the championship, showcasing exceptional experimental techniques and extraordinary scientific skills to our panel of judges. 🏆

We were truly inspired by the passion, discipline, and curiosity of these students. Not only did they just conduct experiments, they demonstrated the potential to become the scientific leaders of tomorrow. 🔥

The awards ceremony was held on the same day to celebrate these achievements.
