【WYC Students shined at iGEM 2025: Gold Medal and World Top 10】
We are extremely proud to announce that our students, as part of the HK Joint School team, have achieved outstanding results at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Grand Jamboree. Held in Paris, France, from 28 to 31 October, the event is the world's most prestigious synthetic biology competition.
Competing against prestigious high school teams from around the globe, the HK Joint School team was awarded a Gold Medal and was named one of the World Top 10 in the high school division.
The team's project also received several major accolades in high school division, including:
World Top 5 for Best Model
World Top 2 for Best Software Tool
World Top 5 for Best Village Project
Our school’s team members, 5A Lam Shing Chun, 5A Leung Wang Ho, 5A Chan Ming Yan, 5A Li Yin Kang Samuel, 5B Law Sze Yuen, 5B Chin Sze Tung and 5B Yu Ka Yu, were primarily responsible for the project's modeling work. Their work involved advanced computational biology to validate the project's design before laboratory work began. Using molecular dynamics simulations, they successfully predicted how the team's custom-designed RNA molecule would fold, bind to target pesticides, and trigger the biosensor's detection mechanism. This critical “dry-lab” work proved the project's feasibility and was recognised as one of the top 5 models in the world.
The HK Joint School team’s project, “PestiGuard”, centered on addressing the pressing global issue of pesticide contamination in crops. Conventional testing methods are often expensive. Through advanced synthetic biology, the team designed, built, and tested a novel, low-cost biosensor system. They engineered bacteria to produce a RNA aptamer that, upon binding to pesticide residue, suppresses a fluorescent signal. This provides farmers with an affordable and accessible way to detect contamination and ensure food safety.
The iGEM Competition, established by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2004, is an annual, worldwide event that challenges students to use synthetic biology to solve real-world problems. This year's Grand Jamboree brought together thousands of students to present their work and collaborate.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our students for their hard work, ingenuity, and dedication to scientific research. Their success is a remarkable achievement, and we are incredibly proud of their contribution to this international success. We would also like to thank the teachers and mentors who guided them throughout this challenging journey.

【Wa Ying College Concert 2025: A Triumph of Musical Resilience】
On 12 July 2025, our school music teams transformed unexpected challenges into a triumphant musical celebration at The Hong Kong Chinese Church of Christ. When severe weather forced a last-minute venue change, over 120 student performers, along with the supporting teams, demonstrated remarkable adaptability, presenting a polished concert to guests while raising funds for the Music Room Enhancement Project.
The evening began with an electrifying performance by the Wind Band, conducted by Jack Cheng. They opened with The Great Locomotive Chase, captivating the audience with rhythmic effects that vividly evoked the power of a steam train. The Recorder Ensembles followed, showcasing their versatility as they transitioned seamlessly from the playful At the Circus suite to a sophisticated Bach arrangement, concluding with Andy So's arrangement of his original composition, written to celebrate the WYC 50th Anniversary. A standout moment came when the String Quartet joined Liu Qin soloist Audrey Chan for Tajik Dance, blending Western and Chinese traditions with seamless artistry.
Under Chung Ming Him's direction, the String Orchestra navigated the Baroque precision of Vivaldi with the contemporary demands of Meyer's Century One Tusonic. The String Octet later charmed the audience with lush arrangements of Piazzolla and Hisaishi, while the Choir's emotional performance of No Woundless World highlighted their vocal maturity.
The concert culminated in a powerful finale featuring combined Orchestra and Choir performing In Christ Alone. The uplifting harmonies and profound message concludes the concert with Wa Ying's Faith in Christ.
Behind the scenes, students from the Stage Team and Campus TV Team worked tirelessly to ensure smooth transitions in the adapted venue while accurately capturing these unforgettable moments on camera.
As the final applause faded, we thank God for the blessings that made this concert possible. It stood as a testament to the power of teamwork and passion, proving that, even in the face of challenges, extraordinary artistic achievements can be realized.
