Our school takes part in the collaborative research project “Measuring Science Literacy in Cross-Cutting Concepts in Hong Kong Junior Secondary Schools”, jointly developed by The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Harvard University Center for Astrophysics.
Supported and funded by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), the project centers on Cross-Cutting Concepts (CCC) across Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science, including Cause and Effect, Systems and Models, Scale and Proportion, Stability and Change. These key concepts align closely with the “Unifying Concepts” emphasized in Hong Kong’s junior secondary science curriculum.
The research aims to gain in-depth understanding of students’ preconceptions and intuitive ideas developed during basic science learning, so as to build a set of scientific, reliable and validated diagnostic tools for science teachers in Hong Kong, supporting the improvement of science teaching effectiveness.
As one of the participating schools, our school actively responded to the project invitation, systematically arranged Secondary 2 students to join the assessment sessions, assisted the research team in data collection, and jointly supported the implementation of this important educational research.
Participation in this joint university research allows students to experience the actual process of academic research, engage with science literacy assessment methods, and broaden their learning experiences beyond the classroom. It not only deepens students’ understanding of scientific concepts but also fosters a rigorous learning attitude and critical thinking skills. Students with outstanding performance will receive a certificate from The University of Hong Kong in recognition of their efforts.
Advancing science education requires collective efforts from schools, academia and the community. By participating in such research, our school aims to provide students with more diverse learning opportunities, support educational research in the sector, and contribute to the continuous development of local science education.
