Besides diamond grading reports, GIA has also consistently offered colored gemstone grading services. Do you know what colored gemstone reports are available?

GIA offers two types of colored gemstone reports:
1. GIA Colored Stone Identification Report: Confirms whether the gemstone is natural or synthetic, provides a detailed description of its type, shape, size, color, and cut, and clearly indicates all detectable treatments.

2. GIA Colored Stone Identification & Origin Report: In addition to the above information, it provides additional information on the gemstone's origin. Currently applicable to emeralds, rubies, sapphires, Paraiba tourmalines, red spinel, alexandrite, and jade.

Few gemstones have inspired as much wonder, myth and devotion as sapphire, September's birthstone. As one of the “big three” colored gems alongside ruby and emerald, sapphire has long been treasured by royalty and collectors alike. Ancient Persians believed the Earth rested upon a colossal sapphire whose reflection painted the sky blue, while medieval rulers and clergy prized the stone as a symbol of wisdom and the heavens.

Modern science tells an equally fascinating story. Sapphire is the mineral corundum, ranking 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Although best known for its rich blue color, corundum occurs in nearly every color of the rainbow. Red corundum is called ruby, blue is sapphire, and all other colors are classified as fancy sapphires. Among the rarest and most coveted are the pinkish orange to orangy pink padparadscha.

A new copper-bearing tourmaline find in southern Ethiopia has been creating buzz since late May. Gemologists at GIA and Gübelin Gem Lab separately investigated the new material to determine if it was, in fact, copper-bearing tourmaline.

GIA research scientists examined a parcel of over 100 rough and faceted samples and confirmed Ethiopia is producing significant quantities of high-quality paraíba tourmaline. Compared with Brazil, Mozambique and Nigeria, Ethiopian stones stand out for higher vanadium, gallium and lead—an element “signature” that supports confident origin identification in GIA Tourmaline Identification and Origin Reports.

One gemstone. Three colors. One remarkable journey.
This 1.18-carat natural, unheated Brazilian tourmaline displays vivid zones of purplish pink, violetish blue and green—all formed naturally as the crystal grew. Subtle changes in its chemistry gave rise to each color, with manganese producing the purplish pink hues and copper creating the vibrant blue and green.

Tourmalines with multiple colors aren't unusual. What makes this one so special is the vivid intensity and striking separation of each color. The blue and green portions are colored by copper and fall within the color range accepted as “Paraíba” by the The Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC), while the purplish pink portion, colored primarily by manganese, falls outside that range.
