Establishing a Framework for Effective Mentorship - The 2nd HKU Venture Mentoring Service (VMS) Programme Mentor Training

Last Friday, we gathered for another extraordinary day filled with learning and growth at the 2nd HKU Venture Mentoring Service (VMS) mentor training session, proudly powered by the HKU Super Angel Network.

💡 We were thrilled to welcome back Mr. Kent Summers, a distinguished instructor from MIT, as our special guest trainer once again!

🚀 This session marks a huge milestone for our ecosystem as we celebrate the official onboarding of 27 new mentors! Joining forces with our returning first cohort mentors, this expanded powerhouse of talent spent the day mastering global best practices to scale next-generation ventures:

✨Morning: Unlocking the core MIT VMS curriculum, guiding principles, and collaborative team-mentoring dynamics.
✨Afternoon: Live strategy sessions applying the strict MIT VMS framework to real-world startup challenges.

🤝 The highlight of the afternoon was the hands-on mentoring sessions with two dynamic HKU ventures: ReMobility Limited and Chemmino Biotechnology Limited. Putting the strict MIT VMS framework into live action, our newly expanded mentor network provided real-time, strategic guidance to help these startups tackle real-world challenges.

Today was a testament to the power of structured mentorship, continuous collaboration, and a rapidly growing community. We look forward to advancing this mentorship journey together and driving meaningful global impact for our innovators and leaders.

[Media Coverage] The AI boom is transforming our world, yet few people realise the massive energy consumption behind it. Did you know that up to 25% of electricity is lost before computation even begins, solely during its journey to AI chips? ⚡

A research team led by Professor Han Wang at The University of Hong Kong has developed a revolutionary "3D Integrated Power Delivery Technology" for next-generation AI chips! By utilising an innovative vertical 3D architecture and advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductors, this breakthrough shortens the power delivery path, boosting efficiency to an impressive 95% and reducing power loss by more than 10 fold! 🔋💡

This innovation not only saves energy but also reduces the size of power systems fivefold, paving the way for greener data centres, humanoid robots, and drones. If adopted globally, it could save an amount of energy equivalent to the annual output of 30 nuclear power plants. 🌍

Bringing together innovation champions from faculties, schools, and administrative units across the University, the HKU RISE Working Group serves as a platform to connect diverse expertise, foster collaboration, and drive high-impact initiatives throughout the HKU ecosystem. To many, it is the “RISE League” of innovation leaders across campus.

Chaired by Professor C. Jason Woodard, Co-Director of the HKU School of Innovation (I‑School), the renaming aligns with HKU’s new RISE branding— , , , and and reflects an expanded vision to unite the University’s key drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship, research, and partnership development.

🚩 To mark this new chapter, Professor Hayden So, Director of the ‑School, welcomed members to the School’s temporary quarters in HKU’s new Tech Landmark complex. Following updates from group members, the session featured remarks from distinguished guests: Professor Ho Cheung (Anderson) Shum, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), shared his vision for the RISE Working Group upon his return to HKU; Professor Stephanie Ma, Associate Vice-President (Research and Innovation), emphasised the Group’s role in connecting people and capabilities. Both underscored the importance of fostering collaboration that extends beyond individuals to create systemic impact.

The meeting concluded with a brief discussion of the Group’s annual plan and in-person networking. Overall, this hybrid gathering strengthened connections and energised HKU’s research and innovation community. A warm welcome to our new members—we look forward to driving impact across campus together! 🌱

Startup Funding Unlock offers workshops and consultation sessions for early-stage startups, delivered by TEC's Professional Service Partners in Financial Advisory Services, helping founders strengthen their fundraising capabilities, understand key investment terms, and engage potential investors with confidence.

This special edition is open to early-stage startups and prospective TSSSU@HKU applicants. Participants will learn about the TSSSU@HKU 2027/28 funding arrangements, alongside key investment terms, fundraising essentials, and practical business insights for startups. In addition, participants may register for one-on-one consultation sessions with TEC's Professional Service Partners to discuss fundraising strategies, investment terms, and investment readiness. Due to limited availability, priority will be given to startups that have secured an investment term sheet or are actively pursuing fundraising opportunities.
