PolyU Design has been an important hub of design education and research for Hong Kong. The School was ranked 15th on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings® by Subject - Art and Design in 2020 and is consistently among the top 20 in the world. The School offers a wide range of disciplines, including: product design, interaction design, information design, advertising design, media

design, interior design, environmental design, social design, service design, transitional environments design, innovative business design, intelligent systems design, smart service design, and innovative multimedia entertainment. The School is home to over 900 undergraduate and postgraduate students annually, of which approximately 85 study at the doctoral level. The School provides a well-equipped teaching and learning environment in the Jockey Club Innovation Tower, a landmark building designed by the late Zaha Hadid.

🎊A new semester, a new beginning. 🎊

PolyU Design recently welcomed our newest undergraduate and taught postgraduate students on the Orientation Days. From programme sharing and alumni insights to networking with peers, faculty, and industry professionals, students gained a first glimpse into the vibrant community that will support their growth as designers and innovators.

We also extend a warm welcome to our inbound exchange students from around the world, who bring diverse perspectives and enrich our global learning community.

Guided by the spirit of , we encourage all our students to stay curious, challenge assumptions, and explore new possibilities through design.

Heartfelt congratulations to Reef of Hope and its designer, Dean Chan of Team Orz Limited and a PolyU Design alum, a start-up supported by the LKSD&I IdeaSparkAction Fund, on winning iF Design Award 2026.

Reef of Hope has developed a marine-safe artificial reef system that helps restore oyster habitats, enhance water flow, and support oyster larvae growth, demonstrating the potential of design-led innovation for environmental sustainability. The project has already earned significant international recognition, including: National Winner, James Dyson Award 2025 (Hong Kong), Gold Medal, 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, and other prestigious accolades.

The IdeaSparkAction Fund, offered by the Li Ka Shing Design and Innovation Centre (LKSD&I), supports projects and start-ups founded by PolyU Design students, alumni, and academic staff. Through funding and strategic support in business, branding, design, and marketing, the Fund helps accelerate the growth of design-driven ventures and innovation initiatives.

How does design shape a world that works for everyone?

In a recent Mill MILK Weekly_pedia episode exploring the challenges faced by left-handed people in everyday life, Mr Chan Kam Fai, Lecturer at PolyU Design, shared insights on inclusive and human-centred design from a social design’s perspective. The feature highlights how thoughtful design can better respond to the needs of different users and create more equitable experiences for all.

The discussion highlights an important lesson we teach at PolyU Design: good design starts with understanding people. Our students are trained to identify unmet needs, challenge assumptions, and create inclusive solutions that improve everyday life.

Where can a PolyU Design education take you? 🌏

This year, our students ventured beyond Hong Kong to experience design in action around the world. From studio visits in Tokyo to immersive learning opportunities in London, Singapore and Amsterdam, they engaged with leading practitioners, explored diverse cultures, and gained valuable global perspectives.

At PolyU Design, international exposure is an integral part of the learning journey, empowering students to broaden their horizons and understand design in a global context.

Because great design starts with understanding the world.

🎉 MScIME students shine at ChinaJoy Expo in Shanghai!

Congratulations to MSc in Innovative Multimedia Entertainment (MScIME) students MA Jiayin and TANG Jian, who were selected as Hong Kong representatives to participate in the Hong Kong Pavilion at ChinaJoy Expo 2026, the largest digital interactive entertainment event on the Chinese Mainland.

Under the theme "Level Up with AI", they showcased:
🎮 Egg Farm – a roguelike adventure game
🥽 Ecce Home: The Last Lucid Dream – an immersive VR experience

The students also had the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, fellow game developers, media representatives, and potential publishers, gaining valuable insights into the future of digital entertainment.

📖 Book Sharing with Prof. Yanki C. Lee | Designing AS People

Join Prof. Yanki C. Lee, Visiting Professor at Design School Kolding, Founder of Enable Foundation and recipient of the 2023 Distinguished Design Alumna of the Year Award, for a thought-provoking sharing session on her new book, Designing AS People.

In this co-curated book-sharing session, Yanki will explore a critical question: How can we move beyond designing for inclusion toward fundamentally rethinking our own positionality AS designers?

The new publication marks the conclusion of her visiting professorship in Universal Design at the Design School Kolding (Denmark), bringing together contributions from 28 collaborators and international design scholars to explore the role of authenticity in co-design processes and inclusive design practice.

The session is co-hosted by the Information Design and Service Design specialisms, represented by Chun Hei Cheng and Prof. Angus Donald Campbell, respectively.

♻️ How can waste become a resource for design innovation?

RE: From Waste Wood to New Possibilities explores how damaged wood and returned furniture can be transformed beyond disposal through design and material research. By reclaiming offcuts and reimagining them as new materials and spatial applications, the project redefines conventional notions of waste and demonstrates the potential of circular design approaches.

From prototype works developed by Product Design students to processes that convert discarded wood into lower-carbon aviation fuel, the exhibition showcases creative responses to waste-to-reuse-and-repurpose through experimentation, material exploration, and sustainable innovation.

The exhibition presents the outcomes of a collaborative initiative between the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), the School of Design, IKEA Hong Kong, Carbon Lite System (CLS), and DFI Retail Group. The project is led by Dr Ho-Yin Tse (Principal Investigator) and Prof. Sunny Choi (Co-Investigator), in collaboration with Dr Paul Lo.

DDes Design Vision Expedition: Exploring AI Transformation in Hangzhou✨

Our Doctor of Design (DDes) conducted an immersive expedition to Hangzhou to explore real-world AI transformation across leading design, technology, and research hubs.

As a leading centre for AI innovation and digital entrepreneurship, Hangzhou provided an ideal setting for exploring AI transformation in practice. Our DDes students engaged directly with leading academic and industry organisations in Hangzhou, including China Academy of Art, Zhejiang University, ZJUT Yinhu Innovation Research Institute, Lingdi Style3D, Shenhao Technology, and FUNTEK Culture Media.

From industrial robotics to generative 3D fashion and AI-driven animation, our students explored the intersections of technology, strategy, and human-centered design.

By connecting theoretical frameworks with hands-on fieldwork, our DDes practitioner-researchers are translating observations and inquiries into strategic visions and insights needed to lead organisational change in an AI-empowered era💡
