為協助前線教師更精準地應對這些難題，團隊最新開發了《香港初小學生英語學習困難行為量表（小二及小三）》，教師只需觀察學生讀寫相關行為並完成量表，透過電子計分工具就能快捷及有效地識別學童的潛在英語學習困難，以便進一步評估並及早提供支援。

【小挑戰：你可以讀懂圖中的文字嗎？】👀🕵️‍♂️

你花了多少時間才看懂這段話？這其實模擬了英語學習困難者閱讀時的情況。🔍
讓我們從語言學習的三個核心來拆解他們的困難：

🔡字形上，他們可能會將字母看成符號或圖像、及容易混淆相似的字母。🖼️
🔊語音上，他們難以將字詞與對應的發音聯繫起來。🤔
📖語義上，當大腦消耗了大量精力去「解碼」這些像符號一樣的字詞時，就很容易分散注意力，導致難以理解整段文字的真正含義。📖💭

只要在「字形、語音、語義」任何一個環節出現障礙，我們都難以閱讀和書寫該語言。✍️❗

希望這個小挑戰能讓大家從多角度了解英語學習困難，培養更強的同理心，也更欣賞英語學習困難者所展現的堅毅和努力。💗🤝🌟

【Mini Challenge: Can you decode the text in the picture? 】👀🕵️‍♂️

How long did it take you to read the quote? The text in the image is designed to simulate what reading possibly feels like for people with English Learning Difficulties. 🔍 Let's analyse it from the three elements, form, sounds, meaning, we learnt before!

🔡Form: Letters might look like random, confusing symbols or pictures. 🖼️
🔊Sound: Matching the words with the pronunciation is tough. 🤔
📖Meaning: Decoding each word is hard enough, not to mention understanding the whole passage. 💭

If there are difficulties in any of these three key areas - form, sound, or meaning - reading and writing in that language becomes a massive challenge. ✍️❗

We hope this challenge will help you step into their shoes and encourages empathy. Let's appreciate the effort and resilience of those who are facing these challenges. 💗🤝

【小朋友覺得學習英語很難？原因可能是……】🧐

作為家長，看到小朋友英語科成績不理想，難免會擔心：「是不是溫習時間不夠？學習方法不適合？還是語言天賦不足？」其實，很多小朋友即使付出了努力，但仍難以跟上進度，這可能與英語學習困難有關！🤔

在香港，約有10%學童有讀寫障礙。讀寫障礙是以學童的母語作為評估語言，而大部分本地學童的母語為中文。由於中文和英文的語言系統有很大差異，學習這兩種語言時所需的技巧亦不盡相同。我們的團隊研究發現，約有14%的香港學童有英語學習困難，其中約60%的學童同時在中文及英文均有學習困難。📊📝

有英語學習困難的小朋友會在字形、語音或語義這三個語言學習核心要素中，出現其中一個或多個障礙，以致他們在閱讀和拼寫英文時倍感吃力。🔡📖🧠

若小朋友未能有效掌握英語，成績自然不理想，容易打擊自信心，進而影響學習動力，形成惡性循環。如果能及早識別問題，並有針對性地教授學習技巧，便能幫助小朋友改善英語學習表現。💪✨

If your child finds English difficult, there may be a reason! 🧐

As a parent, it is easy to feel concerned when your child’s English results are not satisfactory. You might wonder, “Are they not studying enough? Is their study method not right? Or do they just find languages difficult?” In fact, many children still struggle with English even when they try hard. This might be due to English Learning Difficulties (ELD). 🤔

In Hong Kong, about 10% of students have dyslexia. Dyslexia is usually checked in a student’s first language, which is Chinese for most of the local students. Since Chinese and English are very different, the language acquisition skills needed are not the same. Our research shows about 14% of Hong Kong students have ELD, and around 60% of them also struggle with Chinese. 📊📝

Children with ELD may have trouble with Orthography (Form), Phonology (Sound), or Semantics (Meaning), which makes reading and writing English hard. 🔡📖🧠

If a child can’t pick up English well, it may affect his or her grades, and hence possibly weaken the confidence and learning motivation, creating a vicious cycle. If we can identify the problem earlier and teach the right strategies, we can help children do better in English. 💪✨
