School of Chinese
The University of Hong Kong
The School of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong, in collaboration of Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, is proud to host the first international conference on interpreting in legal and healthcare settings in Hong Kong. This conference will bring together participants from all over the world and will enable scholars to present their research findings in interpreting studies as well as allowing educators to exchange pedagogical ideas in interpreter education.

The theme of this conference is interpreting in legal and healthcare settings, where the quality of interpreting is essential and has been the focus of research in interpreting studies over the past two decades.

This two-day event will take place on the centennial campus of the University of Hong Kong, a world leading university which prides itself on its scholarly research and quality education, and which is the first university in Hong Kong to offer Translation as an undergraduate programme.

Examining adaptive supports in e-learning activities through analysis of fine-grained students' behaviors in learning mathematics

Dr SHUM Kam Hong
EdD Student, Faculty of Education

Primary Supervisor: Dr S K W Chu
Co-supervisor: Dr A H K Yuen

Abstract

Learning diversity is a common difficulty encountered by mathematics teachers in primary and secondary schools. Standardized instructions are often inadequate in guiding students with diverse needs, readiness, interests and cognitive strengths. This study aims at empowering mathematics teachers to tackle the issue of learning diversity by applying suitable pedagogical actions according to the fine-grained learning behaviors of individual students. With the support of multi-touch tablet computers and mobile app, attributes of teaching and learning contexts that carry rich information about how students participate in learning activities can now be captured by automated, real-time and high-frequency data collection technologies. This study will explore the methods to classify students’ behaviors and the mechanisms to offer learning supports to students adaptively by tracking and analyzing the snapshots of the attributes of students’ behaviors continuously throughout the duration of tablet-based e-learning activities.
Through the collaboration with the researchers in the Department of Computer Science of the University of Hong Kong, an experimental platform called SkyApp is developed to support novel ways to capture and analyze fine-grained activity details of students, such as handwriting of calculation in solving multi-step questions, number of attempts in answering questions, answering sequence and thinking time. By making use of SkyApp, mathematics teachers can create tablet-based e-learning activities and at the same time track and analyze learning profiles of students during and after the delivery of the activities. Through graphical visualization of analyzed results, SkyApp can provide insightful information to teachers about the learning behaviors of their students.
Based on the design-based research methodology adopted in this study, I have conducted pilot tests in two primary schools to support e-learning activities by SkyApp in teaching mathematics for eight months. The review of the pilot tests demonstrated the potential in performing learning analytics in real-time, through which classification of students by learning traits of performance and engagement can be formulated by applying clustering algorithms on multiple learning metrics of marks, time and number of attempts in solving mathematics questions.
In the subsequent phases of this study, I will make use of the instruments of learning analytics, questionnaires and group interview to explore the generalized methods in classifying the traits of learning mathematics, namely engagement, motivation, and emotion, based on fine-grained details of students’ inputs during tablet-based e-learning activities. I will then evaluate the effectiveness of the adaptive supports that will be offered to individual students in learning mathematics. These adaptive learning supports include content selection, scaffolding and gamification. I will finally investigate how students, teachers and parents can participate in the setting of the adaptive supports through SkyApp. The findings of this study will help to investigate the guiding principles in developing educational software through which teachers are empowered to identify individual students who need special attention, offer just-in-time guidance to the students in need, and apply suitable pedagogy to suit the immediate needs of students.

PHYSICS DEPARTMENT SEMINAR
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) TeV Gamma Ray
Observatory in Mexico

Dr. Eduardo DE LA FUENTE ACOSTA
Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico
Laboratorio Nacional Conacyt HAWC

The High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is a unique water Cherenkov detector, studying the universe through gamma rays in an energy range from 100 GeV to 100 TeV. HAWC was constructed on Sierra Negra, Puebla, México, at 4100 meters above sea level. It began full operation at the end of March 2015, and it is expected to be ~ 15 times more sensitive (crab) than its predecessor, the MILAGRO observatory. HAWC consists of 300 water Cherenkov detectors, covering an area of 22,000 square meters, each consisting of a corrugated metallic cylindrical structure (7 meters in diameter and 4.5 high) bracing a bladder with 180,000 liters of ultra clean water and 4 photomultiplier tubes on its interior to detect the Cherenkov radiation produced by charged particles from extended air showers. With an instantaneous field-of-view of ~2 str, equivalent to 15% of the whole sky and continuous operation (24 hours per day). HAWC with a better Gamma/Hadron rejection method than other similar experiments, is an ideal survey instrument with a big synergy with other observatories like AUGER,
IceCube, and Air Cherenkov Detectors (IACTs). In this contribution I will present an overview of the HAWC experiment highlighting the Galactic plane results, including a presentation of a new detailed sky map with unprecedented information on detected gamma ray sources, discovery of new gamma ray sources, a flare detected from MRK 501, as well as its upgrading by installation of "outriggers".
