Six months after her very first French lesson with French Smile, Li Hwa Lee found herself in the kitchen of the prestigious French cooking school Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, taking part in a five-hour cooking workshop… in French!

She wasn’t sure how much she would understand but she took on the challenge and quickly realised that she understood much more French than she thought.

When I asked her if she would share her experience for French Smile, she chose to write the entire article in French, just six months after starting to learn the language.

What I love most about Li Hwa’s story is that she didn’t wait until she felt “ready”. She simply decided to try.

My birthday is coming up, and it has made me think about something I’ve learned with time: I care much less about getting everything right, and much more about being able to express who I really am.
It made me think about what I see in my sessions.

When we learn a language, we often focus on finding the right word, making the right sentence, avoiding mistakes. But I’ve realised that the most meaningful moments are when someone stops looking for the perfect answer and simply starts talking.

They forget a word, find another way to say it. They laugh, share an opinion… And suddenly, they are not just speaking French. They are expressing themselves.

La rentrée has always been one of my favourite moments of the year.

There is something about September that makes everything feel possible again.

After the quiet month of August, everything starts moving again.
Children return to school with new notebooks and school supplies, cafés fill up, Theatres announce their new seasons…

And there is a beautiful French word for this moment: La rentrée.
It means much more than back to school or back to work, it carries the feeling of starting again.

Sometimes, the best way to move forward is simply to pause.

Over the past few weeks, I left my laptop at home and travelled through Brazil.
For once, I wasn’t writing, creating, or planning what would come next. I was simply there, walking, observing, listening, meeting people, and letting myself be surprised.

Somewhere along the way, I realised I wasn’t just discovering a new country. I was reconnecting with my curiosity.

Travelling reminds me why I created French Smile.

Learning a language is never just about words. It’s about people, culture, conversations, and those small moments when you suddenly feel connected to a place that was completely unknown only a few days before.

Today, a new season begins at French Smile.

Over the coming months, I’d love to share with you the stories that inspire me, cultural discoveries, everyday French expressions, and thoughtful resources to help you feel more confident speaking French and, above all, to enjoy the journey.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

We all do it sometimes. We look at someone who seems further ahead, more confident, more fluent, and suddenly our own progress feels smaller than it really is.

I have experienced this many times, not only with languages, but also as an entrepreneur and as a French person building a life abroad.

What I have learned is that growth rarely happens in a straight line. It happens quietly, through small steps that are easy to overlook while focusing on someone else’s path.
The same is true when learning French.

The most meaningful comparison is not with someone else. It is with the person you were a few months ago.
