🌸 Welcome to MAJS 2026–27! 🌸

On 5 September 2026, we welcomed 35 new MAJS students to the Esther Lee Building at CUHK’s Chung Chi Campus for our Orientation Meeting. This intake we have a total of new 45 MAJS students.

It was a joyful morning of introductions, experience sharing, and new connections as our students prepared to begin their MAJS journey. The gathering offered an opportunity to meet faculty members, alumni, student helpers, and fellow classmates while learning more about the supportive academic community they are joining.

We sincerely thank our Programme Director Professor Jeremy Yellen, alumni representative Jonathan, and our alumni and student helpers, Kenji, Allan, Aaron, Elen, Ruby, and Steve, for supporting our new cohort.

Congratulations to our 8 new student representatives. We look forward to a meaningful year of learning, friendship, and discovery together! ✨

🎉Congratulations to PhD and MA graduate Dr. Cho Chi-hang Harry, Recipient of the Postgraduate Research Output Award 2025

We are proud to share that Dr. Cho Chi Hang Harry (PhD ’25, MA ’21), has been awarded the Postgraduate Research Output Award 2025, and is the very first recipient from Japanese Studies! 🏆 His research explores global Maoism and how Chinese thought shaped post-war Japan, with published work in important journals like The Global Sixties, Japanese Studies, and Twenty-First Century etc.

“It is a great privilege to be the Department's first recipient of this award. This achievement is all thanks to CUHK and our Department. We have the most outstanding professors, interdisciplinary experts, and world-class library collections here. The Department inspired my interest in Japan and guided me into serious academic research. I am sure that this is the best place in the world to study Sino-Japanese history.”

📖 New Publication | Special Issue of Review of Japanese Culture and Society (Vol. 37)

The special issue, titled Color and Form: The Affordances of Color in Japanese Literature, Art, and Media, was recently published. Professor Matthew Mewhinney of the Department of Japanese Studies has guest-edited the volume, with Contributing Editor Franz Prichard.

This special issue features essays and translations by scholars that examine the affordances of color in art and other literary forms in Japanese culture. It explores how Japanese artists across time and through a multiplicity of aesthetic forms use color to create aesthetic experience, enchanting or otherwise.

Key highlights:
✒️ English translations presented for the first time from philosopher Imamichi Tomonobu, textile artist and Living National Treasure Shimura Fukumi, ceramicist Takiguchi Kazuo, and poetry scholar Akahane Shuku.
📓 New translations of works by literary giants such as Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, Natsume Sōseki, and Murata Sayaka.
📜 A bibliography of important works on color from many fields in Japanese studies, including literature, history, archaeology, art and design, painting, textiles, and film media.

[WEFL Program Continues Empowering Women from Diverse Backgrounds]

On 14 June 2026, Women’s Empowerment through Financial Literacy (WEFL) Program, led by Professor Lynne Nakano, collaborating with EmpowerU, conducted a financial literacy training session at the University of Hong Kong. Twenty-nine domestic workers, primarily from the Philippines and Indonesia, participated in the event.

Professor Nakano, together with team members Dr. Liping Fu and Ms. Chloe Lau Hui Wai, facilitated the session. Aiming to help participants set a financial plan based on personal values, the session covered topics including budgeting, financial goals, negotiating with family members, and avoiding scams.

Established in 2022, the WEFL Program has provided training to hundreds of women from diverse backgrounds in Hong Kong. The program continues to deepen its engagement with ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong, empowering women to manage their finances and improve their quality of life and well-being.

✨ MAJS Summer Study Trip 2026 | Hokkaido, JAPAN ✨

The Department of Japanese Studies organized a study trip to Hokkaido, Japan, on 7-9 May 2026, with 11 MA students. The itinerary included visits to Hokkaido University including a lecture by Prof. SAKURAI Yoshihide on “Tetsuya Yamagami trial” and Prof. Guts NG on "Immigration and Xenophobia”. Beyond the lectures, visits to the Hokkaido Museum and Historic Village allowed students to explore regional history and gain a deeper understanding of Ainu culture. From Hokkaido Jingu to Sapporo Factory, students experienced different dimensions of life in Japan. Each eligible participant received a subsidy from the Department as part of the study trip support.

One of the highlights of this trip also included time spent with Hokkaido University students. It was especially meaningful to reconnect with students who had previously joined our Hong Kong visit last November.

“It felt less like a formal exchange and more like reconnecting with friends.” (Words from our MA student)

We would like to express our deepest thanks to our student representative organizers — Ruby, Elen, Fiona and Jasmine — for their tremendous efforts and thoughtful coordination throughout the trip. We would also like to express our heartfelt and deepest gratitude to Prof. Ng, Prof. Sakurai, and all the student volunteers from Hokkaido University, whose kindness and enthusiasm helped make this study trip meaningful and unforgettable for everyone involved.

⭐ Celebrating MAJS Excellence – Dean’s List 2024–2025 ⭐
We are thrilled to share that 10 students from MAJS have been named to the 2024–2025 Dean’s List at the CUHK Faculty of Arts, with the Presentation Ceremony held in March 2026.

A proud moment for MAJS - Mr Lam Chun, Colin (Class of 2024) was selected as the representative speaker for all Faculty of Arts MA Dean’s List recipients. In his speech, Colin reflected on how MAJS’s strong academic support and overseas exchange opportunities shaped his journey - bringing classroom learning to life through meaningful cultural experiences.
He also mentioned our student-organised Tokyo study trip - a true highlight of the MAJS journey that deepens both academic and cultural understanding.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all Dean’s List recipients. May this achievement be a stepping stone to even greater success. Wish all our graduates a bright and promising future!
